Cascade Horizon Band to Play

Learn about the night skies! Stargazers are invited to gather at the Sisters Park & Recreation District building on Saturday, August 19 at 8:30 p.m. for a free presentation and slide show. School Supplies Shortage!

Sisters Les Schwab hosts the annual Sisters School Supply Drive with a collection bin, but the collection is quite low. There is a special need for the following: college-ruled spiral notebooks; college-ruled notebook paper; wide-ruled notebook paper; 24-count box of Crayola crayons; and 8-count Crayola water color paints. Open House for SHS Transfers (Grades 10-12)

All transfer students grades 10-12 are invited to Sisters High School on Monday, August 28 for a transfer-student open house, running 9 to 11 a.m. Stop by any time during that two-hour period for a tour, a locker, and help with your schedule. Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser

Bring family and friends to a Pancake Breakfast at the Camp Sherman Community Hall on Sunday, August 20 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. for all-you-can-eat ham, eggs, pancakes, OJ and coffee, plus a special offering of "Egglipse stacks." Adults are $8, kids ages 5-10 are $5, under 5 free. Sponsored by the Camp Sherman Historical Society and Friends of the Metolius. For information call 541-595-2719.

Taking "Bling" Donations

Sisters Kiwanis is taking donations of antique or vintage jewelry and watches, even costume and broken pieces, all year long in preparation for next year's Antique & Collectibles Sale. Interpretive Walk with Friends of the Metolius

On Saturday, August 19 from 10 a.m. to noon, join Oregon Master Naturalist Gary "Gus" Gustafson for a two-mile walk along the Metolius River. You will learn about and how to identify species in the area, their patterns, and fish restoration efforts. Meet near the Camp Sherman Bridge fish viewing area. SHS Freshmen Orientation

Incoming freshman are invited to Sisters High School Monday, August 28 for new student orientation, running 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Seniors and juniors serve as leaders and mentors, with large and small group activities of team-building and discussions. After lunch, students get locker assignments and run through a shortened version of their day. Bus routes will run in the morning and afternoon. New Student Registration

Registration for new students in Sisters public schools will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on August 14-17 and August 22-25; at Sisters Middle School and Sisters High School for youth entering those grades, but due to construction taking place at the elementary school, new Sisters Elementary School students will register at the district office, 525 E. Electric Vehicle Workshop

Operation Christmas Child

Since 1993, Samaritan's Purse has delivered 135 million shoebox gifts to children affected by war, poverty, disease, famine and disasters in more than 100 countries. August Art in the Library

Spinners/Weavers Group

Career Funds Available

Applications are available for the Sisters Kiwanis Career Opportunity Fund to help adult residents of Sisters establish an occupational path. You may pick up forms at the Kiwanis House, corner of Oak Street and Main Avenue between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Thursdays, and during regular hours from the Sisters Habitat for Humanity office. Caregivers' Support Group

A free support group for caregivers of those suffering with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia takes place at Sisters City Hall the third Tuesday of each month from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association, meetings provide emotional, educational, and social support. Book Corner Needs Books!

The supply at the Friends Book Corner is very low! Donations are gratefully accepted Tuesdays and Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Please consider donating gently used books 10 years or newer; CDs, DVDs, and books on tape (but no cookbooks at this time). Open Computer Lab

Every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Sisters Library, all are welcome to come to the open computer lab to practice computer skills and get help from library staff. For more information call 541-312-1072.

Home Repair with Habitat

Sisters Habitat for Humanity is accepting applications for its home repair program (roof repair, weatherization, ramps, exterior painting, etc.). Applicants must own their home (not assessed at more than $200,000); have a need for improved housing; be able to repay a loan; partner with Habitat with sweat equity hours and have lived in Sisters for at least one year. Bottle & Can Drive for Furry Friends Foundation

Furry Friends Foundation can use your redeemable bottles and cans. Help us raise funds to assist families with free spay and neuter services, emergency medical assistance and more by dropping them off (in closed plastic bags, please) to the blue recycle bins on the front west porch at The Nugget. NOTE: They MUST be labeled with OR 5¢ or 10¢ - if not, please take them to the recycle center on Sisters Park Drive. For more information call 541-549-9941.

Kindergarteners' Story Time

Land Trust Walks & Hikes

Now through November, Deschutes Land Trust volunteer naturalists lead more than 120 free walks, hikes, and bike rides. Explore birds, wildflowers, and geology at various protected lands in small groups. Registration online is required, and each outing opens one month prior to its date. Food Assistance at the Kiwanis Food Bank

Your family may be eligible for food assistance at the Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank. Eligibility rules may be found online at or visit the food bank for complete information. The food bank is located at Main Avenue and Oak Street and is open once a week, every Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. You may also get cat and dog food weekly during those hours at no charge, provided by Furry Friends Foundation of Sisters.

Linda Monahan Memorial Service

A memorial service for Linda Monahan will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, 68825 Brooks Camp Rd., on Saturday, August 19 at 10:30 a.m.

Senior Lunches and More

Meet your fellow seniors at the Sisters Senior Luncheon! Lunch is served every Tuesday at noon at Sisters Community Church with a $3.50 suggested donation for those over 60. The espresso hour runs 11 a.m. to noon, and BINGO is played after lunch until 2:30 p.m. A free blood pressure clinic is offered the last Tuesday of the month from 11 a.m. to noon. Family Fun Story Time

Family Fun Story Times for kids ages birth through 5 take place at the Sisters Library on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. They feature songs, rhymes and crafts, all to grow young readers. Caregivers must attend with the child. For more details call 541-312-1072.
