The streets of Sisters were thronged on Sunday afternoon as art lovers turned out to see some 30 fiber artists demonstrating their craft in Sisters stores and galleries.
Traffic was heavy - a welcome sight to merchants who count on a busy summer to make their year, especially in the midst of the current downturn.
Several expressed appreciation for the economic impact of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, founded more than two decades ago by Jean Wells. The Around the Block Fiber Arts Stroll on Sunday was part of the kick-off events for the show, which runs on Saturday, July 11.
"The whole town has been waiting for this, and we can thank our lucky stars for Jean Wells right now," said Myrna Dow, owner of High Desert Gallery.
"It's good to see things finally kicking in," said Dan Rickards of Clearwater Gallery. "That's what it feels like."
As Rickards spoke, Sherry Steele kept a pair of fly fishermen rapt as she demonstrated her fly-tying technique. Down the street at The Jewel, Doug Roy astounded watchers with the fine detail of his paper sculpture. He cut out tiny pieces of paper and glued them together to create little mosaics in an endeavor that takes extraordinary patience and attention to detail.
Music played at several locations as strollers paused to refresh themselves with snacks and drink, and quilters examined quilts hanging in many stores - a little foretaste of things to come.
