'Yes' votes lead in school bond election
As of 5 a.m. Wednesday, it appeared that the Sisters School District's $10.7 million bond request was on its way to passage, with 52 percent of the vote (2,017) in favor to 48 percent (1,826) opposed.

Kiwanis boosts career training
Sisters Kiwanis recently awarded Sisters resident Janette Jaun a Career Opportunity Fund (COF) scholarship to pay for training as a phlebotomist. Phlebotomists are trained to draw blood from a patient for medical testing, transfusions or donations.

Sisters students celebrate poetry
Sisters Elementary School recently celebrated National Poetry Month with a "Poetry-Palooza." Throughout the morning all students from grades kindergarten through fourth grade, including the Sisters Park & Recreation District preschool, moved from classroom to classroom and experienced different interactive workshops all around the theme of poetry.

Students in Rima Givot's Chemistry 2 class had the opportunity to work with scientist Steve Peterzen throughout the last two weeks to launch a 600-gram balloon - complete with experiments they designed - and capture live data.

Greenhouse returns home to school
Fourteen years ago, Shannon Pollard discovered an unused greenhouse at Sisters Elementary School. She used that greenhouse to start an elementary school garden club that had 55 members in the first year.

Civil War coming to Central Oregon
The Civil War is coming to Central Oregon - and it has nothing to do with Ducks vs. Beavers.

The Northwest Civil War Council will present a full Civil War reenactment and "living history" at House on Metolius, Saturday and Sunday, May 21-22.

Ballots out for school bond measure
Ballots will start appearing this week in Sisters mailboxes, as the school district's proposed $10.7 million bond measure goes before voters.

The general obligation bonds would cost taxpayers approximately 41 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation - or about $123 per year for a home assessed at $300,000.

Students develop dramatic skills
The third- and fourth- graders at Sisters Elementary School had an opportunity to work on their drama skills through the Studio to School program over the past few weeks. Miss Lovely, an artist-in-residence, worked with each class for a period of 4-4.5 hours throughout the last four weeks.

SMS students take on chess challenge
On the morning of April 8, four Sisters Middle School students prepared themselves to go head-to-head against the best middle-school-aged chess competitors in the state at this year's Chess for Success state tournament.
