Simpson pleads guilty to theft

Simpson was proprietor of Nancy Simpson Bookkeeping in Sisters and had a number of clients. She kept the water company's accounts from 1983 to 1995. The embezzlement took place over a period from January, 1991, to August, 1995.
Indian Meadow Water Company officials told police that Simpson overpaid herself by an average of nearly $1,000 per month over a four-year period.
According to Deschutes County District Attorney Mike Dugan, sentencing guidelines indicate that Simpson faces two years of probation and service of 120 "custody units," 60 days of which could be jail time.
The remaining custody units would be served through nonjail methods such as community service or electronic monitoring.
Dugan said Simpson, who now lives in Arcata, California, has agreed to restitution of $55,727 as a condition of probation.
According to Dugan, her probation could be expanded to a maximum of five years as she repays the money.
"She'll have to come up with a payment plan," Dugan said.
The district attorney calculated that Simpson will be required to make monthly payments of $928.78 to meet her probation conditions.
