Ruth (Huntington) Hewitt died on Sunday, March 18, 2007 in McMinnville at the age of 94 years. She was born November 25, 1912 in Drain to parents Perit and Helen (Garceau) Huntington.

Ruth moved to Sisters in 1914 and grew up on a farm (parents helped settle the area). She was third of five children. Helen graduated from Redmond High School in 1930. She attended Teacher's College (Normal School) in Monmouth and taught right out of college for a year in Yamhill. She taught school in Cline Falls (just west of Redmond) in a one-room school for a period of time, in Sisters full- and part-time for many years, and also substituted in Tumalo.

She met and married Loyd Hewitt in Sisters on June 1, 1939. They were married for 53 years when Loyd died on June 10, 1992.

She wrote a weekly news column for the Bend Bulletin and Redmond Spokesman during the late 1950s and was an active member of Sisters Church of Christ and in later years attended Christian Church in Bend. She taught Sunday school, vacation Bible school, was active in women's ministries and welcomed visiting pastors and entertained traveling strangers into her home for home cooked meals and lodging.

After living in Sisters for 78 years, following the death of her husband Ruth moved to the Valley to be near her daughter, Sara Scheer in Canby and during the last part of her life lived in McMinnville.

Ruth is survived by four children: Sara Scheer of Canby; Sam Hewitt of Sisters; Bonnie Vaughn of Seattle; and Dan Hewitt of Redmond.

Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and sister Lucille McKenzie of Portland. Besides her husband, she is preceded in death by one son: Robert Dean Hewitt.

Funeral services will be held in Redmond on Saturday, March 24, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Christian Church of Redmond with burial to follow at the Redmond Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Christian Church of Redmond. Redmond Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
