Sisters is set to mark the World Tai Chi and Qigong Day event in Bend. This year Sisters will sponsor an event here.

This annual event happens on April 26, at 10 a.m. It begins in the Far East in Samoa and then continues for 24 hours throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, North and South America. There are celebrations in 80-plus nations around the world.

In Sisters, the event will be held at Creekside Park.

The purpose of the event is to educate people about tai chi and qigong, and the health benefits they provide. The use of these ancient Chinese modalities promotes increased focus and concentration, healing balance (physical and energetic), and spiritual and community connection.

The event also provides information about cultural philosophies. Qi, or chi ("chee"), is vital life force or energy and is shared with all life. Qigong is 5,000 years old and tai chi 3,000.

There will be several teachers at the events, each demonstrating their particular practice:

• Joyce Burk Brown will demonstrate Soaring Crane Qigong. She has done tai chi since 1989 and qigong beginning in 1998. Certified as a Soaring Crane teacher in 2004, she has taught at COCC, Sisters Athletic Club, SPRD and privately. Presently she holds a regular Soaring Crane Qigong practice at Green Ridge Physical Therapy & Wellness on the third Saturday of the month and will be teaching through SPRD in the fall. She may be contacted at 541-420-5875 or [email protected]

• Dawn Song started doing qigong in 1991 after studying tai chi for four years, and has studied qigong in China. She has been teaching since 2007, including Zhineng Qigong and Spring Forest Qigong. Classes are held regularly at Cascade Fitness on Thursdays at 1 to 2:30 p.m. and in Camp Sherman at the Community Hall on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Dawn can be reached at

[email protected]

• Irv Givot is a chiropractor in Sisters, and studied in China. He will lead the group in healing techniques and will bring copies of his book written about his experiences from his China trip.

Meet at Creekside Park from 10 to 11 a.m. for information-sharing, demonstrations and questions and answers. This event corresponds with Earth Day.
