The new pastor at Christ’s Church of Sisters wants his congregation to feel comfortable. The non-denominational church is casual enough that people simply call him “Pastor Dwane.”

“I even preach in blue jeans and cowboy boots,” said Dwane Miller.

Miller said he is happy to be ministering to the church and looks forward to serving the needs of Sisters.

“The goal of the church is to help reach the community. We want to reach people who are hurting,” said Miller.

Miller said “God’s timing” was perfect when he was hired as pastor last March. He is a retired math and physical education teacher from Crook County who was ordained many years ago.

Miller was familiar with the church, having acted as a substitute minister in the past. Miller is a 33-year resident of Central Oregon who lives in Terrebonne with his wife of 27 years, Cindy. The couple has three grown children.

Miller was hired by the church after former Pastor Shane Hall was accused of sexual abuse of a minor. When Hall led the church, it was named Christ’s Church of New Beginnings. The allegations left the church in turmoil but now Miller said “people are growing spiritually.”

“What I’m trying to help is the healing process,” Miller added.

Matt Cyrus, one of four board members, said Miller is well-liked and his presence is helping the church move forward.

“It’s stabilizing — we’re optimistic,” said Cyrus.

Miller said he is a strong leader, yet he likes to delegate also. He is impressed by the willingness of church members to help.

“People are stepping up when they are asked,” said Miller. One member noticed a need for the youngest members of the church and took the initiative to start the “children’s church.”

Miller preaches on a range of Bible topics. His recent sermons have been a series on how to pray. He uses the Lord’s Prayer as a tool to help and encourage his congregation.

“If the church doesn’t pray, things don’t happen,” said Miller.

Music at the church, played with piano and guitar, ranges from traditional to contemporary.

“We want it to meet everybody’s needs,” said Miller.

He hopes a music minister will join the church to add to the current music program.

Christ’s Church of Sisters meets currently at Sisters Elementary School, Sundays at 10 a.m. for coffee, 10:30 a.m. for a sermon.
