Developments designed to serve travelers can operate under new zoning in the City of Sisters.

The Sisters City Council on Thursday, August 10, amended the city's zoning ordinance to create a new "commercial campus" zone, "to provide for areas suitable for commercial uses and services primarily oriented to automobile traffic."

The new "campus" designation requires limited highway access and internal traffic circulation plans for any development. Development in the zone would be subject to Sisters' western architectural theme requirements.

The council's move also changed the zoning 15.31 of property owned by developer Bill Willitts along Highway 20 at the east end of Sisters from residential to commercial campus.

According to city planner Neil Thompson, Willitts plans to develop a spa there. Willitts has not submitted an application, but Thompson said the concept includes health and exercise facilities and visitors' cabins.

Other land that could fall under the commercial campus zoning includes the current U.S. Forest Service compound, if that land is ever re-developed. The land is currently under a "public facilities" zone.
