Sisters community members turned out under clear blue skies on Wednesday, May 1, to watch school officials turn the first symbolic shovelfuls of dirt for the new $21 million Sisters High School.

Those attending the groundbreaking ceremonies were treated to a presentation by architect Scott Steele showing the site plan, floor plans and some conceptual drawings of the new school.

Representative Ben Westlund congratulated the community for its efforts.

"A new school says something fundamental about the community that is committed to constructing it," Westlund said.

"You deserve to congratulate yourselves," he said. "This was tough sledding. This was not something that was easily done."

Board Chair Heather Wester noted that the district is not only breaking ground on a new high school -- the current high school will be converted to middle school use.

That means that students now in elementary school will go to middle school in modern facilities.

Adjourning to the new school site for the groundbreaking, the audience looked out over a vast open space, recently logged in preparation for construction.

Heavy equipment rolled into the site this week to begin preliminary site work and construction will begin this summer.
