Girls basketball team earns playoff spot

Basketball as a contact sport. The Outlaws have been playing tough.
The Lady Outlaws lost 37-34 to Stayton in the third place Capital Conference basketball tie-breaker on Tuesday, February 22. The game was played at Sweet Home, a neutral site for both teams.
Sisters trailed Stayton for the first three quarters of the game and started the final period down by 10. The Lady Outlaws poured it on in the fourth quarter and an Emily VanBlaricum layup tied the game 34-34. Sisters outscored the Eagles 16-6 with 30 seconds left on the clock.
Stayton scored two points at the foul line with three seconds left in the game. The Lady Eagles made one of their two shots at the line to win 37-34.
Coach Bill Blevins was very pleased with his team’s effort considering they were missing the injured Jenny Boswell, who leads the team in scoring and rebounding.
Sisters entered the playoffs as the Number 4 seed in the Capital Conference and played host to Number 5 seed Molalla on Thursday,February 24.
The Lady Outlaws led the entire way, defeating Molalla 52-31.
Sisters had a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and then was unable to hit a bucket.
By the end of the third period Molalla had pulled to within four points, trailing the Outlaws 28-24.
With just over four minutes left in the final quarter the Outlaws extended their lead to seven and Molalla immediately went into a zone defense.
Blevins said, “I figured that they were going to sit in a zone. I wanted to make them come out and man us up.”
Molalla came out of the zone and matched up their 6-foot-2-inch center on Katie Hughes (5-foot-8-inch). Hughes proceeded to drive by their center and score four consecutive times to secure the Outlaw victory.
Sisters traveled to Stayton on Saturday, February 26 and defeated the Number 3 seed Lady Eagles 42-34.
The Outlaws were down 6-4 in the first quarter when Kristi VanBlaricum hit a three to push Sisters to a 7-6 advantage. Sisters never looked back and held the lead the remainder of the game.
The win earned Sisters the Number 3 seed from the Capital Conference. The Outlaws play at Scappoose on Wednesday, March 2.
