A sheriff’s deputy pulled a man out of harms way during a response to an accident east of Sisters in Tumalo.

On Wednesday, November 27, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a multiple-vehicle crash at Tumalo Road near Swalley Road.

According to a sheriff’s office social media post, Sgt. James McLaughlin was assisting with traffic control when a pickup began sliding down the grade toward another vehicle that was stuck in snow.

“A passenger from the stuck vehicle got out and realized the truck was sliding toward him,” the sheriff’s office reports. “He tried to run but fell down onto the road.”

“Sgt. McLaughlin ran between the two vehicle (at risk to himself) and took hold of the person by the armpits as the male was under the truck and about to be crushed. Sgt. McLaughlin was able to pull him free seconds before the two vehicles collided. Both Sgt. McLaughlin and the other person were uninjured.”

The incident provides a reminder that it is important to stay alert to oncoming and passing traffic if involved in an accident or stranded on the roadside during winter weather events. See related story, page 1.
