Peterson Ridge Rumble will be bigger than ever
Byline info is not available
Tuesday, April 3, 2012 5:24 AM
What started as a 30-kilometer trail run out of Sean Meissner's front yard has become one of the most popular trail runs in Oregon - and this year's edition of the Peterson Ridge Rumble should be bigger and better than ever.
The race, which begins and finishes at Sisters Middle School, is set for Sunday, April 15.
Meissner got permission from the Forest Service to expand to a total of 500 runners for the event this year, which features a 20-mile and a 40-mile course. In addition, he will be paying out prize money to the winners for the first time this year. Last year, about 340 runners took part.
"I can't be happier about the way this race has grown and developed," said Meissner, who is currently residing in Portland. "It's exciting for me and it's definitely a boon to the Sisters community."
The vast majority of the participants come from outside Central Oregon, so the impact on the local economy is notable, according to Meissner.
"I have not done a study, but I know these folks spend the night, dine, and shop in the area when they come in for the race," he said. "I am happy to help support the greater Sisters community."
The overall male and female winners of each race will receive $100, with $50 offered to the top masters (40 and over) winners. Max King, an international-level runner living in Bend, is among the entrants in the 40-mile race.
"Max and I are both sponsored by Montrail, and I have hoped he would find time in his race schedule one of these years to join the Rumble," said Meissner. "He adds to a very high-quality field of runners."
The 20-mile course covers much of the Peterson Ridge Trail system as an out-and-back course, while the 40-mile course does the same before swinging southwest of Sisters, including part of the Metolius-Windigo Trail.
Don Hildebrand and Gene Trahern, both of Sisters, are the only two runners registered who have done all 10 years of the Rumble, according to Meissner.
"There are still spots available and I would love to have as many locals as possible join the fun," said Meissner.

Proceeds from the Rumble support the Sisters Outlaws cross-country teams, which provide volunteer support for the race. Community members who would like to be involved can call 541-647-3314.
