  • Running commentary

    Charlie Kanzig|Updated Aug 2, 2022

The first time I saw Sydney McLaughlin compete, she was about to start her senior year of high school as a 16 year old. I was covering the 2016 Olympic Trials at historic Hayward Field and wondered if this teenage phenom was for real. She had established herself as an up-and-coming track star in the 400-meter hurdles. The question on everyone’s mind was: Can this whippersnapper possibly make the Olympics by placing in the top three at the Trials? The answer turned out to be y... Full story

Eugene cannot be described as cosmopolitan, or even really urban, but during the World Athletics (track-and-field) Championships, which have attracted hundreds of athletes and thousands of fans from over 200 countries for the meet that runs July 15-24, “Track Town, USA” has certainly taken on a distinctive international flavor. As I parked near Mac Court on the University of Oregon campus Thursday evening to pick up my media credentials, I looked across the street to the pio... Full story

Three applicants, Rodney Cooper, Asa Sarver, and Josette Johnson, were briefly interviewed at the public meeting before the vote took place. The board had nearly a week prior to the meeting to review the applicants’ comprehensive applications, according to board member Jeff Smith. • Grateful seniors wrap up high school

    Charlie Kanzig|Updated Jun 14, 2022

One by one, as the four student speakers delivered their addresses Friday, June 10 at the 74th Sisters High School commencement, a clear theme emerged: gratitude. Perhaps having the final months of senior year return largely to normal following nearly two years of pandemic tumult gave the class of 2022 enough breathing room to allow them to reflect on the good in their lives. From start to finish, thankfulness, joy, and celebration marked the ceremony, which was held in a... Full story

  • Running commentary

    Charlie Kanzig|Updated May 31, 2022

Being a runner can be a fairly solitary experience, in part because it can be tough to find the right running partner. About five years ago I met a potential candidate. He had just moved here from Hawaii and, as a beach bum, had limited experience running in the forest where I always go. But his enthusiasm gave me no choice other than to give him a shot. Perhaps it helped that, like me, he was a little “chunky,” which made us comfortable with one another. His speed sur... Full story

  • Running Club starts in Sisters

    Charlie Kanzig|Updated May 4, 2022

Sisters Country is well-established as a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, so after moving here last year it came as a bit of surprise to long-time runner Amy Margolis that no organized running club existed in the area. Margolis, a physician’s assistant, and her husband, David Wilson, decided to take matters into their own hands —and feet – to change that. The couple, who hail from Seattle but lived a somewhat nomadic life for the three years prior to settling in S... Full story
