The Hoodoo Challenge Run to the Top half-marathon lived up to its name on Saturday, July 29, as nearly 100 brave souls not only agreed to run 13.1 miles on dusty and rocky trails, but to finish that run with a 1.9-mile climb up to the top of the Hoodoo summit. The second edition of the Sisters Kiwanis event took a big jump in registration, and the hospitable service club's efforts did not disappoint the participants' despite the rigors of the course. For me, summertime means being outdoors as much as possible, whether it be running, hiking or biking. I have also found myself on my back deck stretched out on the couch or in the shady lawn in an Adirondack chair reading quite a bit this month. When it comes to reading, I have an eclectic taste. I love biographies, but I am a sucker for mysteries and political thrillers as well. This summer, I got shamed into finally starting the Harry Potter series, certainly making myself one of the last Americans to do so. But my... Full story
Last week as I moved slowly along the west wall in the deep end of the Tollgate pool, faithfully doing my "aqua-jogging" workout, I allowed myself to consider how mind-numbingly boring the activity could be. Inching along at what must equate to about half a mile an hour, trying to keep some semblance of running form while trying to anticipate the waves kicked up by swimmers in the next lane. This came the day after speaking at the cross-country camp about "the mind of a runner" and intrinsic and extrinsic motivation related t... Full story
The fourth edition of the Great Northwest Cross Country Running Camp drew a record number of participants to the six-day training event sponsored by Sisters Park & Recreation District and directed by Josh Nordell. Seventy-five runners aged 8-17 spent the week building teamwork, rafting rivers, competing, laughing, and, of course, running. Participants from throughout Oregon, and two from Idaho, made their homes in big tents on the athletic fields at Sisters High School. They v... Full story

After introductions by Principal Joe Hosang and a beautiful rendition of the national anthem by the SHS Jazz... Full story
Eugene, Oregon hosted the most high-caliber track and field meet in America last week as world-class athletes jumped, threw, and ran world-leading marks at the annual Prefontaine Classic, a Diamond Level meet that honors Oregon's own Steve Prefontaine, considered one of the finest American distance runners of all time, who died in a car accident in 1975 at the peak of his career. Mo Farah of Great Britain, who trains under Alberto Salazar's Nike-sponsored Oregon Project, was... Full story
What do you do as an encore when you are considered the world's greatest athlete and own two Olympic gold medals, a world record, and numerous other titles? For Ashton Eaton, sharing with young people what he has learned through his athletic career is part of his "second act." Eaton dropped by Sisters High School on Friday, May 26, for an informal talk with about 40 students about striving for improvement through working toward a goal or idea. "You don't have to achieve the... Full story
Things started well for the Sisters Outlaws on day one of the OSAA State Championships - and ended just as well on day two. Her performance pushed her ranking in the event up to second place among 4A girls. Desirae DeRosiers of Molalla leads the rankings with a very fine time... Full story

His mark is a school record. His time not only launched him to the top of the 4A ranks, but places him sixth among all Oregon classifications. It was all part of a busy day... Full story

Central Oregon has a rich agricultural history, but for many young people the connection to farm and ranch life is much-changed from the past. That is part of the reason Sisters Elementary School third-graders visited the Deschutes County Fairgrounds for the Central Oregon Agricultural Field Day on Friday, March 24. Since agriculture is one of the foundations of Oregon's economy, there are countless academic applications within the industry. Jessica Jansen, executive director... Full story
The totally rebuilt track-and-field facility got broken in Wednesday, March 22, in the first home track meet at Sisters High School since 2014. Teams from Crook County, La Pine, and Madras joined the host Outlaws in the early season meet in cold, dry conditions that produced few exceptional marks, but plenty of courageous efforts, according to Head Coach Jeff Larson. "Everyone competed hard and the efforts given now at this early part of the season show me that our kids are... Full story
The winter snows receded just in time for the Sisters Outlaws track and field teams to undertake the first meet of the season, a dual against the Lava Bears of Bend High on Wednesday, March 16. As is the case in all early season contests, the meet gave athletes the chance to shake off the rust and loosen the kinks out in what really amounts to a dress rehearsal for the season ahead, according to head coach Jeff Larson. That is not to say that there was any lack of competitiveness by the Outlaws based on some of the efforts wi... Full story
As I drove down Wagon Wheel in Tollgate yesterday on my way home, I saw a runner ahead of me moving at a strong pace and witnessed real proof that this long winter of our discontent is truly behind us - because that crazy runner wore nothing but his Nikes and a pair of shorts! In addition to the bare-chested runner, the sights and sounds of robins chirping, frogs croaking and crocuses pushing up through the dirt also signaled that perhaps spring really has arrived. Many... A national championship sporting event took place Saturday in Bend - and for other than a few diehard fans and faithful volunteers, it went largely unnoticed. Bend hosted the USA Track and Field (USATF) national cross-country championships for the second year in a row at River's Edge Golf Club. The meet crowns the national champions and is the qualifying event for the world cross-country championships scheduled for March in Kampala, Uganda. I can't blame people for not... Full story
Ashley Nordell of Sisters won the overall individual title at the Ozark Trail 100 Mile Endurance Run in Missouri on November 4. The race for first came down to the final miles, making her first mixed 100-mile race victory a real barn-burner. Nordell and runner-up Tommy Doias of Missouri were together at the final aid station with 6.5 miles to go, but Nordell prevailed, pulling away from Doias to win in 19 hours 58 minutes and 58 seconds. Doias came through in 20 hours 7... Full story
Champion sports teams are typically comprised of a group of highly motivated individuals coached by knowledgeable, effective leaders who gel together for a common goal. This chemistry is rare and often includes both overt and subtle values that can result in not only winning state titles, but in the development of good character and being able to see the "big picture" in life. Such was the reason behind coaches Rod Jones and Brad Bulloch helping arrange a trip for the Outlaws... Full story
Sophie Borders saved her best race for last on her way to ninth place in a personal record time at the OSAA Cross Country Championships held Saturday, November 5, at Lane Community College, leading the Outlaws to a fourth-place finish. That result earned the team another trophy for the program's collection. Borders and Anna Bartlett ran close together throughout the race, just as Coach Josh Nordell had hoped they would. Bartlett also ran a personal best, finishing 10th,... Full story
When the starting-gun fired at Lane Community College Thursday morning for the Sky-Em District girls race, Junction City's Shayla Solomon shot to the lead, hoping to thwart any challengers. Anna Bartlett and Sophie Borders had a different notion: slowly chip away at that lead and make a decisive move in the middle of the race to take the command themselves. Their plan worked to perfection, and the pair finished 1-2 on the way to Sisters' sixth straight District cross-country... Full story
