The Sisters Outlaws girls track and field team won 11 of 17 events to defend its Sky-Em District title at Sutherlin High School last Thursday and Saturday - but it wasn't a cakewalk. The Wally Ciochetti Invitational at Cottage Grove on Friday, May 5, gave the Outlaws track and field team one last chance to tune up before this week's two-day Sky-Em District Championships, scheduled Thursday and Saturday at Sutherlin High School. Sisters hosted 11 teams at the Sisters Rotary Invitational Saturday, April 29. They flexed some muscle on the way to shining performances and the third school record in the past week. Big meets can produce big results, and Keegan Greaney appears to be proof of that. He faced a fast field of competitors at the Summit Invitational on Saturday and came away with the fastest time of his career for the 300 hurdles, coming within inches of a sub-40-second mark by finishing in 40.02 seconds. April is the heart of the season for track and field athletes, and the Sisters Outlaws have been plenty busy with two meets in the past week. On Thursday, April 13 the Outlaws traveled to Elmira for a three-way league meet that also included Cottage Grove. Central Oregon has a rich agricultural history, but for many young people the connection to farm and ranch life is much-changed from the past. The totally rebuilt track-and-field facility got broken in Wednesday, March 22, in the first home track meet at Sisters High School since 2014. As I drove down Wagon Wheel in Tollgate yesterday on my way home, I saw a runner ahead of me moving at a strong pace and witnessed real proof that this long winter of our discontent is truly behind us - because that crazy runner wore nothing but his Nikes and a pair of shorts! The Sisters School District is well known for finding ways for students to get outside the school walls for enhanced education. That is exactly what seventh-graders from Sisters Middle School did Friday, February 24, with a retreat at Hoodoo Ski Area. Caitlin Schwab and Sam Thorsett represented the Sisters Outlaws Nordic ski program last weekend at the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association (OISRA) State Championships held February 24-25 at Mt. The Sisters Rodeo grounds served as the site of the Oregon Back Country Horseman's Association annual meeting on Saturday, February 18. Ashley Nordell of Sisters won the overall individual title at the Ozark Trail 100 Mile Endurance Run in Missouri on November 4. The race for first came down to the final miles, making her first mixed 100-mile race victory a real barn-burner. Nordell and runner-up Tommy Doias of Missouri were together at the final aid station with 6.5 miles to go, but Nordell prevailed, pulling away from Doias to win in 19 hours 58 minutes and 58 seconds. Extremely wet course conditions did nothing to slow down the Outlaws' cross-country teams at last Wednesday's Country Fair Classic. Invite strong cross-country teams from throughout the western U.S. to a flat, fast course, and quick times are a likely result.
