Getting back to competition after a long spring break did not faze the Outlaws. The 14th annual Peterson Ridge Rumble 20- and 40-mile trail run is set for Sunday, April 10, with a full field of runners in both distances. Race Director Sean Meissner, a former resident of Sisters now living in Durango, Colorado, is in town all week getting the course checked over and marked before the 8 a.m. start of the 40-mile race. One of the advantages of running is that you are typically going at a speed that allows you to regard things you would not notice when biking or driving. There is a sign that I have driven past hundreds of times along Highway 20. It's just beyond the edge of town, on the north side, where cars pick up speed as they head out toward the Santiam Pass. The second race of the 2016 Nordic ski season brought noticeable improvement among the members of the Outlaw team at the XC Oregon Invitational at Mt. Bachelor on Saturday, January 23. My transition back to America after two years in South Korea has been challenging and interesting in a variety of ways. I didn't know that my return would coincide with the loss of my ability to run. We returned in mid-June, but could not move into our Tollgate home which was being rented out, so we moved into a place at Black Butte Ranch, praying that our home would become available before the lease was up in June 2016. Unlike the past two seasons with scarce snowfall, the 2016 high school Nordic ski season got off to a good start with plentiful snow and scores of participants at the Teacup Race held near Mount Hood on Saturday, January 9. The Sisters Outlaws, a small but mighty contingent totaling six athletes, fared quite well overall among a total of nearly 150 skiers. The Sisters Middle School cross-country teams wrapped up a successful and fun season with the championship meet held in Bend on Tuesday, October 20, according to Coach Tiffany Tisdel. The Sisters Outlaws took on the Seaside Three Course Challenge on Saturday, September 19, and produced impressive results. The girls team won the Division Four team title, while the boys team finished fifth. Brandon Pollard, a 2014 Sisters High graduate and incoming sophomore at Gonzaga University, captured the silver medal in the 1,500 meters at the Junior Pan-Am Games on Saturday, August 1, in Edmonton, Alberta. His U.S. teammate Blake Haney edged Pollard by .02 seconds to win the race. Haney, a sophomore-to-be at Oregon, placed third in the 1,500 at the NCAA Championships in June. In 2009, 13-year-old Brandon Pollard ran the 800 meters at the Hershey's Track and Field National meet in Pennsylvania. Ten members of the Sisters High School track team are now owners of state meet medals after last weekend's OSAA Championships held at Hayward Field in Eugene. One of the challenges of Sisters School District's unique two-week spring break is the havoc it causes for spring sports coaches with league contests scheduled during the vacation.
