The month of May is championship season for track-and-field, and Head Coach Jonathan Kelly feels good about his team's prospects after two meets last week. "The team is doing well," he said. Mary Flande, who spent 20 years working for the Sisters School District as a teacher, coach, and athletic director, was inducted into the Oregon Athletic Directors Hall of Fame at the group's 54th Annual Conference and Banquet held at Sunriver Resort Saturday, April 17. Flande has spent a lifetime associated with athletics. The high-powered Wally Ciochetti Invitational at Cottage Grove Friday May 12 concluded the regular season for the Outlaws’ track and field season with the District Championships set for May 18-19 at Siuslaw High School in Florence. Just like the spring weather, track-and-field athletes showed notable improvements as the Outlaws’ team entered the month of May with two local meets last week. Wednesday, May 3, the Outlaws competed against Caldera and Redmond on the Panthers track, which turned into a personal record fest for both the boys and girls teams. Sisters Middle School (SMS) was the place to be on Wednesday, April 12 for the annual STEAM Expo, which showcased some of the science, technology, engineering, art, and math learning that is happening at the school. Visitors experienced exhibits and activities that ranged from stop-motion animation to squeegee art to fiddle musical chairs. The magic of Hayward Field, followed by good competition at the Meet of Champions, helped many members of the Outlaws track-and-field team produce career bests last weekend. The 21st edition of the Peterson Ridge Rumble trail run turned out to be one for the record books, not only weather-wise, but in distance. Thanks to a heavy dumping of snow at higher elevations overnight, which continued into the race day, the normal 40-mile ultra portion of the Rumble was scaled back to 36 miles, and minutes after the runners left the starting line it was pared down another 10 miles after reports of impassable conditions on the Windigo Trail. A strong wind and cool temperatures made personal records a rarity at a three-team meet held at Mountain View High School on Wednesday, April 12, but the Outlaws track-and-field team showed progress nonetheless, according to coaches. Athletes from five visiting teams joined the Outlaws for the Sisters Invitational track- and-field meet on Saturday, April 8 under partly sunny skies — a break from winter weather. Lilly Sundstrom had a banner day, with two individual wins and one runner-up finish to lead the Outlaw girls. The Sisters Outlaws’ first track-and-field meet of the season turned into a marathon event that lasted well past 9 p.m. It gave the team a chance to “knock off the rust” and get into the competitive groove. Teams from Gilchrist, North Lake, Paisley, Wheeler, Yoncalla, Culver, Madras, Redmond, Ridgeview, and Caldera also took part in the meet hosted by Crook County. The luck of the Irish smiled upon over 200 green-garbed runners and walkers, as Saturday morning dawned bright and clear for the second annual Lucky Leprechaun 10k and 5k on March 11. The Sisters High Nordic ski team completed its season at the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association-Nordic (OISRAN) State Championships held February 24-25 at Mt. Bachelor. Clayten Heuberger, Joseph Souza, and Ella Bartlett all medaled at the OSAA 4A/3A/2A/1A swimming championships held February 17-18 at Tualatin Hills Swim Center. Heuberger, a senior who attends Redmond Proficiency Academy but swims for his hometown Outlaws, finished among the top swimmers in both the 100-yard backstroke and the 50-yard freestyle, placing third in both. Two seniors will be representing Sisters High School at the OSAA 3A Wrestling Championships February 17 and 18, based on their performance at the 3A Special District 4 tournament held at Riverside High School. A pair of Outlaw girls competed in the XC Oregon skate ski race at Mount Bachelor on Saturday, January 28. The 4.7-kilometer freestyle race attracted teams from all three of the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association–Nordic (OISRAN) divisions, Northern, Southern. and Mt. Hood. Carter Van Meter pushed his season record to 6-8 on his way to fifth place at 120 pounds in the Tod Surmon Mid-Valley Classic wrestling tournament hosted by West Albany High School last week.
