Competing at Summit High School is the next best thing to a home meet for Sisters, and the Outlaws produced plenty of season bests at the eight-team Summit Invitational on Saturday, April 27, in Bend. Teams came from throughout the Central Oregon region and beyond on a fine spring day at the Storm's state-of-the-art track-and-field facility, which includes a steeplechase water pit that was put to use in the meet's very first running event of the day. The steeplechase includes... Full story
The Sisters Outlaws track and field team trekked over the mountain to the Elmira Relays Saturday, April 20, where they discovered some new talents on the team under sunny skies at the Falcons' brand-new track. The Elmira Relays is one of the longest-standing relay meet traditions in Oregon. All running events are conducted in relay fashion, with exception to the 3,000 meters, providing a team-building opportunity at a time of the season that everyone can use a boost,... Full story

The 11th annual Peterson Ridge Rumble will be staged Sunday, April 14. The event will include a field of nearly 500 runners choosing between the 20- and 40-mile courses on the trails and dirt roads surrounding Sisters. Race director Sean Meissner, formerly of Sisters and now living in Durango, Colorado, reports that 470 runners had registered as of April 3. "It's another good field of runners," he said. "Local runner Gene Trahern is the only entrant to have run in all of the... Full story
Blustery and wet spring weather greeted the Outlaws in a three-way Sky-Em League meet at Junction City Thursday, April 4. Despite some season-best efforts, Sisters could not overcome Cottage Grove's overall depth and Junction City's speed in the sprint events. Official team scores turned out to be inaccurate, but it was confirmed that Sisters placed third among the three schools. The boys team scored the bulk of its points at distances of 800 meters and above, and from Jake... Full story
The track season is still in its early stages, but junior Brandon Pollard has found himself in elite company among 4A runners, with some very fine early season marks to his credit. After placing seventh in last year's state meet in the 1,500, he has an eye on being in contention with the best runners in the st... Full story
Pre-season track is a time for getting accustomed to competition while training toward the district and state meets. Times and marks are used as indicators of development, but team scores, if kept at all, are not the main focus. Such was the six-way meet at Summit High School last Wednesday, March 20 featuring Ridgeview, La Pine, Sisters, Gilchrist, Hosanna Christian and Summit. Juniors Brandon Pollard and Jake McAllister achieved the only victories of the day for the Outlaws, as Pollard captured both the 1,500 (4:19.28) and... Full story
Temperatures in the mid-60s welcomed the Outlaw track and field team to the annual Mountain View Icebreaker and made the meet more of a sweat-maker than an icebreaker. There were some impressive early season performances at the meet held in Bend on Wednesday, March 13. Teams from Ridgeview, La Pine, Gilchrist, and the Cougars competed in the non-scoring meet. It was the first meet as head coach for Josh Nordell, who felt pleased by the competitiveness of his relatively young... Full story

Sisters, Oregon is not so far removed from Lance Armstrong as most people think. He competed in the Cascade Cycling Classic years ago, which has a stage that passes through town. He may have ridden some of the same roads that local bicyclists use regularly. He has been sponsored and promoted by Nike, an Oregon-based company. Everyone knows Lance Armstrong. Armstrong has been in the top of the sports news the past two weeks, "confessing" to Oprah in a two-part interview aired recently about unparalleled deception related to... Full story
Ringing in the New Year tends to mean resolutions, so I asked some of my fellow runners to share some of their running goals for 2013. In addition, since I am the new owner of an iPhone and have become much more aware of the infinite number of applications available, including many related to endurance training, I asked for some "reviews" from some of these same folks. Research indicates that people who actually write down their goals and track their progress are much more... Full story
Most Oregonians know the legacy of Bill Bowerman, long-time University of Oregon track and field coach and co-founder of Nike. There is a deep history of success by the so-called "Men of Oregon" including Steve Prefontaine, Kenny Moore, and others. Such is not the case with the history of the women's track and field program at Oregon - but some former Duck athletes set out to change that with a film documentary entitled "We Grew Wings" which showed at Sisters Movie House on Sunday, December 9. In the process of researching... Full story

With a pack of relatively young, but enthusiastic, runners, the Sisters High School girls and boys cross-country teams look to not only defend their Sky-Em titles from 2011, but to move up in the final standings at the state meet. For the girls' team that is a tall order, considering the team placed third last year in the closest top-three team finish in 4A history in which only six points separated the top three teams. Like Sisters, Scappoose and Klamath Union, who finished... Full story

Through early summer showers most days, the Olympic Trials at Hayward Field in Eugene provided 10 days worth of stellar performances to determine the representatives for the United States at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Those present experienced jubilant cheers for record performances, air sucked out of the stadium after falls and close calls, and a general atmosphere of being part of a world-class event. Those days were blissful for a guy like me, who attended U of O a... Full story
Vintage trailers, fly fishing, and "women only" is the name of the game for the Sisters on the Fly (SOTF), who descended on Sisters Country last week for the group's annual get-together. Hayward Field has seen its share of memorable moments in track and field, but it will be hard to top Ashton Eaton's world-record performance in the decathlon at the U.S. Olympic Trials on June 22-23. The decathlon consists of 10 events - five each day - with a scoring system based on time, height and distance for the different events. For Sisters Athletic Club owner and Eaton's former high-school coach Tate Metcalf, Eaton's athletic show was "exciting beyond description."... Full story

A birthday cake, baked and frosted by two of his current pole vaulters, Andrew Snyder and Sara Small, greeted long-time track and field coach Jim Anderson at the Outlaws' practice last Friday, a day before he turned 75 years old. The 2012 season marks Anderson's 51st year in coaching young people in Oregon, and he has no plans to hang things up in the immediate future. Anderson, who moved to Sisters in 1994 after 31 years of teaching and coaching, primarily at Clackamas... Full story
