The Sisters Schools Foundation came through with a much-needed purchase for Sisters Middle School with the addition of 36 Google Chromebooks for use by the 400-plus students there. Stormy, wet conditions did not deter 29 hardy souls who strapped on their snowshoes to compete in the second annual Hoodoo Snowshoe Shuffle held Friday evening on Hoodoo's Nordic trails. A bright, sunny day on the mountain served as a perfect antidote for the mid-year doldrums for the eighth-grade class from Sisters Middle School on Thursday, February 2, as the group took part in the annual Winter Retreat at Hoodoo. The Sisters Outlaws' Nordic Ski team braved windy conditions at the Oregon High School Nordic Organization Teacup Skate Race, held at the Teacup Lake Nordic Center near Mt. The second annual Resolution Run and Walk attracted 87 participants who decided to start the new year on the move. Runners and walkers of all ages chose one of three distances - one mile, five kilometers, or five miles - to cover in the non-competitive event. There is nothing like a good running dog. For virtually my entire adult running life I have had the pleasure to own dogs that love to get out and run with me. Far from the familiar trails of Sisters Country, Sean Meissner found himself awestruck and inspired as he took part in the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 6. With a goal of averaging six-minute miles, which would translate to about a 2:36 finish time, Meissner, 38, embarked on his quest on the streets of the Big Apple at 9:40 a.m., just after the elite runners departed. A fine autumn morning greeted about 30 runners and walkers for the annual Key Club Harvest Ramble Saturday, October 29. The course began at the Village Green Park and traversed a loop on the lower Peterson Ridge Trail. Members of the Sisters Key Club, a student branch of Kiwanis, organized the event. For Ashley Nordell and Sean Meissner of Sisters, the first Sisters to Bend Marathon provided a familiar course for the classic 26.2-mile race. The Sisters Outlaws Portland To Coast High School Relay team "Black and White Bandits" placed seventh among co-ed teams and 14th overall in the annual trek from Portland to Seaside. The Outlaws have entered at least one team every year since 2000, making the event a much-anticipated tradition. The dog days of summer are upon us, and so is the inaugural Dog Days Fun Run/Walk, which gives local runners a chance to run in a race along with their canine friends. The race, scheduled for Saturday, August 6, is sponsored by Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD) and is part of the Dog Days of Summer celebration (see related story, this page). Fans and volunteers lined the narrow road at the summit of McKenzie Pass Wednesday, July 20, in support of the men and women competing in Stage One of the annual Cascade Cycling Classic (CCC). Hayley Palmer did a lot of good running, learning, and community service during her four years at Sisters High School, and the Central Oregon Running Klub (CORK) acknowledged that by investing $500 toward Hayley's future in the form of the inaugural CORK Cross Country and Track Scholarship. The second annual Recycle Run is set for July 4 as part of an Independence Day celebration at Creekside City Park in Sisters. Jena Rickards, a senior at Belmont College in Tennessee and recently returned from studies in Italy, is back in town for the summer and excited to be in charge of the race. The good news is that the cool damp weather is keeping the trails all around the Sisters Country dust-free and in perfect condition for running. We should not take for granted how lucky we are to have the Sisters Trails Alliance keeping our running and cycling trails growing, maintained, and well-marked. Three Sisters runners were crowned state champions at last weekend's OSAA Track and Field State Championships.
