Four Sisters High School seniors got a financial boost for their futures after sharing a total of $6,000 in the first annual Rotary Professional Technical contest. A panel of five judges selected Ben Scharf as the first place winner based upon his presentation of piano and guitar music before a luncheon group of about 35 Rotarians. The fourth annual Sisters Rotary Track and Field Invitational is set for Saturday, April 12. The meet is not only the inaugural event on the Outlaws' new track, it is the biggest and most talent-laden track meet scheduled in Central Oregon this season, according to head coach Bob Johnson. Representatives from over 80 institutions of higher learning will be on hand Tuesday, October 8 at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond at the first annual Central Oregon College Fair. Rebecca Womack, a longtime Sisters resident who recently moved back to Sisters after nearly six years in Colorado, will lead the early education program for three- and four-year-olds at Sonrise Christian for the 2002-2003 school year. In what has promise to become a tradition, eight members of the Sisters girls' cross country team spent three days and two nights camping, rafting and running along the scenic McKenzie River. Cyclists battled brutal heat while on the Sisters leg of the Cascade Cycling Classic. Sisters will be the center of activity for Stage Two of the annual Columbia River Bank Cascade Cycling Classic as the elite men and women riders race through town tomorrow on their way to the finish line at the Upper Three Creek Lake Sno-Park. The Central Oregon Track Club is inviting track athletes of all ages from the region to a series of track meets during the month of July. Sisters fourth graders hit the Oregon Trail for a fun learning experience. Sixty-five fourth graders, three teachers, a musician, and 25 parents embarked on the annual three-day Oregon History Field trip Wednesday, May 29, from Sisters Elementary School. The trip focuses on Oregon history, which teacher Diane Jacobsen insists needs to be learned beyond the confines of the classroom. Colin Hedren celebrates graduation. Ninety-eight seniors entered into the next phase of life at the 54th Commencement of Sisters High School Thursday, June 6 in the high school gymnasium. Amy Cretsinger took the state title in long jump. Amy Cretsinger won one event and was second in three others to lead the Outlaw girls to second place at the OSAA 3A Track and Field Championships. The meet was held Friday May 24 and Saturday May 25 at Hayward Field in Eugene. Henley won the team title with 65.5 points, followed by Sisters with 58 and The Dalles with 47. Amy Cretsinger set a record in the long jump. Sisters' track team turned in a strong district meet performance last week to qualify girls for the state meet in eight of 10 running events. Outlaws girls will also go to state in two jumping events, putting them in position to match or improve last year's third place team finish. From T-ball tykes to teenaged softball players, all the Sisters Little League players lined up around the field Saturday morning, April 27, for opening ceremonies at the Sisters Community Church south field. Little League President Glen Lasken welcomed the players, coaches, and parents and fans and reminded the crowd that Little League is truly an international organization. Randy King and his wife Stephanie in Boston. Local marathoner Randy King realized one of his highest running goals when he finished the 106th Boston Marathon on April 15. The Boston Marathon, considered the most prestigious foot race in America, has been run since April, 1897, after leaders of the Boston Athletic Association were inspired by the marathon that took place as part of the 1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Jim Teeny, world famous in the fly fishing industry, knows how to lure fish to a fly as well as nearly anyone in the United States. His cousin Scott, chairman of the Third Annual Sisters Sportsman Banquet, has a knack for putting together a program to attract sportsmen and women. In a tribute to America, the ninth annual Sisters Act produced some great entertainment and raised some money for good causes Saturday, March 9, at Sisters High School. Six months after the attacks of September 11, the audience and performers began the evening with a presentation of the flag to the familiar Johnny Cash recording about loving America. Marathon training requires long months of building up mileage in preparation for the 26.2-mile test of endurance.
