The 53rd commencement of Sisters High School was the largest ever as 114 students made the partial transition from school years to adulthood on Thursday, June 7 at the high school gymnasium. An additional 11 students completed graduation requirements, but were not present for the ceremony. Close to 300 skiers ventured up the McKenzie Pass for the John Craig Memorial Ski Race and Mail Carry on Saturday, March 24. From Olympians to recreational skiers, the event offered something for everyone. Events included races of 20 kilometers in both classic and freestyle, a 10-kilometer classic, a junior 5-kilometer classic, a 3-kilometer kids classic, and the 30-kilometer mail carry that passes the grave and memorial of the race's namesake.... It's too early to make predictions about how the boys' and girls' track teams will fare this season, but head coach Bob Johnson is pleased with the work in progress so far. The teams have been practicing for more than three weeks now. A group of Iowa high school cross-country runners is giving a whole new meaning to the phrase "distance running." Led by their coach Lowell Lyngaas, members of Valley Community High School cross country team and some other runners from the area surrounding Elgin, Iowa, will begin running from Florence, Oregon, back to Iowa, a distance of 1976 miles, starting Sunday, July 23. By the narrowest of margins, the Lady Outlaws track team claimed its first ever Capital Conference title at the district meet held at Molalla High School May 19 and 20. Sisters nipped Cascade 147.5 to 147 in the closest finish ever in the history of the meet -- and in the 25 year career of head coach Bob Johnson. Participants were treated to a beautiful spring morning Saturday, April 8, for the fourth Kevin Johnson Memorial Run held at Sisters High School. Kevin Johnson graduated in 1993 from Sisters High School and died after being hit by a motorcycle in 1996. The event is sponsored each year by the high school leadership class to raise funds for a scholarship honoring Kevin. Young Sisters wrestlers learned some new moves and strategies during the Christmas break at a SOAR-sponsored wrestling clinic December 28, led by ex-Stanford wrestler Jeff Grant. Grant, a 1993 graduate of South Albany High School, was the Pac 10 runner-up at 167 pounds in 1998 and has stayed involved as a coach and competitor since graduating from Stanford. Andrew Stanfield has taken over the reigns of the Outlaws wrestling team for the 1999-2000 season. Stanfield is taking over a program that has battled low turnout for the past few years, yet he understands that it takes time, patience and enthusiasm to help the program grow. First it was snow, now it's a suspected virus. As if having to postpone its opening for the first time in its 37-year history due to snow wasn't enough, Big Lake Youth Camp was hit with a suspected virus last week that forced the cancellation of this week's session. Like the swallows to Capistrano, the Gold Wing motorcycle club returned to Sisters right on schedule for its annual rally June 17-20. Members from chapters throughout Oregon, Idaho, and Washington -- totaling nearly 450 people -- rode into Sisters for the three days of festivities that more than one rider described as "a family reunion." Cortney Ellis capped a stellar athletic career at Sisters High School by claiming the state title in the long jump Friday, May 28 at the state 3A Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene. Ellis's winning leap of 17-feet-9-inches was her second-best ever and topped the runner-up by nearly a full foot. Ellis actually won the competition on her first jump, sailing 17-feet-5-inches, according to jumping coach Jim Anderson. "With her first jump, she knew she had it in her tank," he said. In eight years of hosting the Sisters Kiwanis Golf Scramble no player has come close to hitting a hole-in-one. But Fred Giacomini of Bend brought an end to the drought, and collected $10,000 in the process, in the event held at Eagle Ridge on Saturday. Giacomini, a last-minute substitute for the tournament, aced the 140-yard 15th hole which was earmarked as the prize-winning hole in the 18-hole best ball scramble. Sixty-seven fourth graders, accompanied by three teachers and 17 chaperones, trekked across much of Oregon last week on the annual "On to Oregon" field trip. Peggy Lutz doesn't need special motivation to get out for a walk. But the Kevin Johnson Memorial Scholarship has given her reason to "go the extra mile" and make her second annual 20-mile march from Sisters to Redmond. Last year Lutz raised over $500 toward the fund for Johnson, whom she knew when he was a student at Sisters High. Like a stampede of wild horses, the Sisters Outlaws overwhelmed the Taft Tigers 40-6 in the second round of the state 3A football playoffs. The Outlaws football team claimed its first ever Capital Conference title with a 26-6 victory over Woodburn Friday night, October 31. The win means that both the Outlaws boys and girls put championship teams in state competition. The Lady Outlaws volleyball squad also notched a conference title. When advertising magnate Dan Wieden bought Blue Lake Resort in the spring of 1996, his vision was to use the camp as a place where young people could come to have new experiences, particularly in the performing and visual arts.
