Jenny Boswell capped a stellar high school athletic career by defending both of her hurdles titles at the state meet Saturday, May 27, at Hayward Field in Eugene. Wet, cool conditions kept times in most events a bit slow, but Boswell had no trouble with the rain as she blasted to a clear win in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.29 seconds. A whole slew of weekend warriors from Sisters took part in the 30th annual U.S. Bank Pole Pedal Paddle in Bend on Saturday — and many of them brought home top prizes. The event, a fund-raiser for the Mt. A beautiful spring evening provided just the right setting at the The Wally Ciochetti Invitational track meet at Cottage Grove for Sisters athletes to tune up for the upcoming district meet. Having a home meet after four weeks of arduous travel appeared to have a positive effect on the Outlaws boys and girls track teams. A dazzling spring day in Stayton helped bring out yet another round of strong performances for the Outlaws track teams on Tuesday, April 24. Sisters’ girls won all the running events through the 800 meters in the three-way meet against Stayton and North Marion and were second in the 1,500 and 3,000. Outlaws tracksters avoided the mid-season blues in meets at Cascade and Springfield last week by producing very competitive marks. The sun shone at Tuesday’s dual meet at Cascade, which may have been the inspiration for some great efforts by the Outlaws. More than 200 runners took to the trails around Sisters on Sunday for the fourth annual Peterson Ridge Rumble 60 kilometer and 30 kilometer trail runs. Race coordinator Sean Meissner was all smiles as finishers began making it to the middle school track, relieved that people had found their way through the many twists and turns of the course, some of which was new this year. Sisters runners will hit the trail in the annual Peterson Ridge Rumble on Sunday, April 9. The race, which draws runners from near and far, is held on trails and dirt roads south and west of Sisters. Race director Sean Meissner of Sisters expects about 200 runners in all to take part in the 30-kilometer and 60-kilometer races. The annual John Craig Memorial Wilderness Ski Event is set for Saturday, April 1, on the McKenzie Pass. The event, sponsored by the Oregon Nordic Club, includes races and tours for all ages. The key event is the 30-kilometer “Mail Carry” which starts on the west side of the Old McKenzie Highway, crosses the summit and finishes about nine miles west of Sisters. For the second year in a row a Sisters Middle School student won the Central Oregon Regional Spelling Bee held Saturday, March 4, at Bend Senior High School. Adam Cash, a sixth grader in Wes Estvold’s class, spelled “envoy” correctly in the final round of four surviving spellers to win first place in the sixth-through-eighth-grade category. In an effort to bring awareness to a distant but important problem, two screenings of the documentary “Invisible Children: Rough Cut” will be shown this weekend at Sisters Movie House. The film focuses on the plight of children stolen from their homes in Northern Uganda by members of the Lord’s Resistance Army. The documentary will show at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, March 11, and again at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, March 12. Dr. Valery Shean, a veterinarian missionary living in Uganda, will be in Sisters for some speaking presentations on March 7-8. “Dr. Val,” as she is affectionately known by the people of Uganda, has served with Christian Veterinary Missions in East Africa for nearly 15 years. She will visit a women’s Bible study at Three Sisters Fellowship on Tuesday March 7, from 9 to 11 a.m. She will focus on the work she has done with women and their families in Uganda. After having last week’s race canceled at Mt. Hood due to heavy snowfall, the Sisters High School Nordic ski team faced near whiteout conditions at Mt. Bachelor on Saturday, February 4, which forced race officials to modify the race plan. A rainout of last Saturday’s open race at Hoodoo has not deterred the spirits of the members of the Sisters High School Nordic ski team. In fact it will simply make Thurday’s night race at Hoodoo Mountain Resort more exciting, according to coach Lee Fischer.
