More than 200 runners took to the trails around Sisters on Sunday for the fourth annual Peterson Ridge Rumble 60 kilometer and 30 kilometer trail runs. Sisters runners will hit the trail in the annual Peterson Ridge Rumble on Sunday, April 9. The race, which draws runners from near and far, is held on trails and dirt roads south and west of Sisters. The annual John Craig Memorial Wilderness Ski Event is set for Saturday, April 1, on the McKenzie Pass. The event, sponsored by the Oregon Nordic Club, includes races and tours for all ages. The key event is the 30-kilometer “Mail Carry” which starts on the west side of the Old McKenzie Highway, crosses the summit and finishes about nine miles west of Sisters. For the second year in a row a Sisters Middle School student won the Central Oregon Regional Spelling Bee held Saturday, March 4, at Bend Senior High School. Adam Cash, a sixth grader in Wes Estvold’s class, spelled “envoy” correctly in the final round of four surviving spellers to win first place in the sixth-through-eighth-grade category. In an effort to bring awareness to a distant but important problem, two screenings of the documentary “Invisible Children: Rough Cut” will be shown this weekend at Sisters Movie House. The film focuses on the plight of children stolen from their homes in Northern Uganda by members of the Lord’s Resistance Army. The documentary will show at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, March 11, and again at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, March 12. Dr. Valery Shean, a veterinarian missionary living in Uganda, will be in Sisters for some speaking presentations on March 7-8. “Dr. Val,” as she is affectionately known by the people of Uganda, has served with Christian Veterinary Missions in East Africa for nearly 15 years. After having last week’s race canceled at Mt. Hood due to heavy snowfall, the Sisters High School Nordic ski team faced near whiteout conditions at Mt. Bachelor on Saturday, February 4, which forced race officials to modify the race plan. A rainout of last Saturday’s open race at Hoodoo has not deterred the spirits of the members of the Sisters High School Nordic ski team. In fact it will simply make Thurday’s night race at Hoodoo Mountain Resort more exciting, according to coach Lee Fischer. More Sisters students will have an opportunity to swim competitively this year. For the first time in 10 years the Outlaws swim team has secured a second training facility and a volunteer coach to give the large number of students trying out for swimming a chance to participate, according to coach Isolde Hedemark. Summer hikes led by members of Three Sisters Fellowship are continuing through August and everyone is welcome according to co-leader Kim Barry. Recent hikes into Tamolitch Pool and Obsidian Falls were magnificent,participants report. The trip into Tamolitch included 15 adults and 16 kids and provided a great opportunity to unite, said Kim Barry.
