As spring turns to summer, it looks as though Sisters area runners are ready for a summer of racing and quality training if the results of races in the region are any indication. Bend's Dirty Half-Marathon, held earlier this month, culminated the spring race schedule as nearly 800 runners took part in the seventh annual event including a very competitive contingent from Sisters. Three Sisters Fellowship is once again offering organized hikes for people of all ages this summer. Due to heavy snowpack in the mountains some of the trails in the area will not be open until later this summer, but hike coordinator Kim Barry has planned the first three trips at lower elevations and will publish future outings as trails open up. A combination of heartfelt tributes and entertaining speeches highlighted the 2008 commencement ceremony at Sisters High School that featured the largest graduating class in the school's history. It took 12 years, but the Sisters High School boys' 1,600-meter relay team is the reigning state champion. The deep snows of winter are turning into whitewater as runoff has swollen rivers around the state. For experienced kayakers, rafters and boaters the raging rivers bring excitement, but for others the conditions could mean peril. Following the hot streak of a week and a half ago, rivers in Oregon are running at extremely high levels. For example, as of May 20, the Santiam River was running at 25,700 cubic feet per second (cfs), not far off the record for the same date of 27,500 set in 1960. Normal for the date is just over... Cory McCaffrey ran like he was shot out of a cannon on his way to winning the 100-meter finals in a meet record of 10.81. The race was a highlight among numerous outstanding performances by the Outlaws at the Sky-Em District Championships held Thursday, May 15, and Saturday, May 17, at Marist High School. A five-way meet in Elmira followed by a trip to the 44th annual Centennial Relays gave the Outlaws track teams plenty of competition last week. The teams showed continued improvement as they move into the home stretch of the season with district competition on May 15. At Elmira Sisters faced the top teams from the Sky-Em league including Marist and Cottage Grove (CG), along with the host Falcons. Illinois Valley from Southern Oregon rounded out the teams. Cory McCaffrey added another jewel to his athletic crown at Saturday's Dick Baker Invitational held at Gladstone High School. He was named athlete of the meet among jumpers and runners. McCaffrey turned on the afterburners to win the 100 meters, anchored both relays to victory and won the long jump. It was all in a day's work for one of Oregon's best prep athletes. The Outlaws track teams enjoyed fair weather and a lot of success at last Thursday's three-team home meet versus La Pine and Junction City. Nearly 280 runners took to the trails around Sisters on Sunday, April 13, for the sixth annual Peterson Ridge Rumble 60-kilometer and 30-kilometer trail run. Race director Sean Meissner reported that 114 runners completed the shortened 60-kilometer course (34+ miles), while 154 completed the lengthened 30-kilometer course. Two school records highlighted the annual Sisters Rotary Track and Field Invitational held Saturday, April 5. Cory McCaffrey smashed his own school record in the long jump, soaring 23-feet-4-inches, which is the second best jump of the 2008 season at any level. The Way We Art, a local gallery and working art studio, has moved from its Hood Avenue location to a new space in the Sisters Art Works building at 204 W. Adams Ave. According to the gallery owners, the new location will allow them to better fulfill their goal to offer creative classes. "The business is unique in that it operates both as a place to sell art but also to have a working studio for us to work in and to teach in," said Alma Cox. The annual Sisters Rotary Track and Field meet is set for Saturday, April 5, at Reed Stadium. The meet promises to provide high quality running, jumping and throwing by athletes from throughout the Central Oregon region and the Willamette Valley. Earning a trip to the Federal Courthouse in Portland for the 2008 Oregon High School Mock Trial competition for the first time was a feat to be proud of for the Sisters High School team. While the team wasn't among the top placers, finishing 15th among 20 teams from throughout Oregon, they were very competitive and much-improved from the regional competition just two weeks earlier, according to coach Mary Thomas. The Outlaws track teams aren't letting cold early season weather keep them from showing their talents. Back-to-back meets last week produced a pair of school records and a number of personal bests. On Tuesday March 18, the Outlaws traveled to Mountain View for the annual non-scored Icebreaker meet. The Outlaws track teams didn't let wind, cold and rain dampen efforts at the first meet of the season, a triangular against Marist and Junction City on Thursday, March 13. The Sisters High School Mock Trial team placed second among six teams in the Central Oregon region, earning a berth at the state competition set for March 14-15, at the Mark Hatfield Federal Courthouse in Portland. Molly Blust finished second in the combined results of the Oregon High School Nordic State Championships held Friday and Saturday, February 22-23, at Mount Bachelor. The Sisters High School Nordic Ski team will culminate its first season as members of Oregon High School Nordic (OHSNO) with the state championships set for February 22-23, at Mt. Bachelor. A fund-raising dinner, raffle and auction to help support mission work in the Philippines is scheduled for Saturday, December 15, at 6 p.m., at Three Sisters Fellowship Church. Walking and running teams with ties to the Sisters area held their own at last weekend's Hood to Coast and Portland to Coast relays.
