Colin Hedren celebrates graduation. Ninety-eight seniors entered into the next phase of life at the 54th Commencement of Sisters High School Thursday, June 6 in the high school gymnasium. Amy Cretsinger took the state title in long jump. Amy Cretsinger won one event and was second in three others to lead the Outlaw girls to second place at the OSAA 3A Track and Field Championships. The meet was held Friday May 24 and Saturday May 25 at Hayward Field in Eugene. Henley won the team title with 65.5 points, followed by Sisters with 58 and The Dalles with 47. Amy Cretsinger set a record in the long jump. Sisters' track team turned in a strong district meet performance last week to qualify girls for the state meet in eight of 10 running events. Outlaws girls will also go to state in two jumping events, putting them in position to match or improve last year's third place team finish. From T-ball tykes to teenaged softball players, all the Sisters Little League players lined up around the field Saturday morning, April 27, for opening ceremonies at the Sisters Community Church south field. Little League President Glen Lasken welcomed the players, coaches, and parents and fans and reminded the crowd that Little League is truly an international organization. Randy King and his wife Stephanie in Boston. Local marathoner Randy King realized one of his highest running goals when he finished the 106th Boston Marathon on April 15. The Boston Marathon, considered the most prestigious foot race in America, has been run since April, 1897, after leaders of the Boston Athletic Association were inspired by the marathon that took place as part of the 1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Jim Teeny, world famous in the fly fishing industry, knows how to lure fish to a fly as well as nearly anyone in the United States. His cousin Scott, chairman of the Third Annual Sisters Sportsman Banquet, has a knack for putting together a program to attract sportsmen and women. Sisters' youngsters performed in a patriotic Sisters Act. In a tribute to America, the ninth annual Sisters Act produced some great entertainment and raised some money for good causes Saturday, March 9, at Sisters High School. Six months after the attacks of September 11, the audience and performers began the evening with a presentation of the flag to the familiar Johnny Cash recording about loving America. After a summer of training on the roads and trails in the Sisters-Camp Sherman area, 12 local runners and walkers competed in the 30th annual Portland Marathon on Sunday, September 30. The organizers of the race, which began with just a couple of hundred runners in 1972, reported 7,448 finishers this year. Marathon training requires long months of building up mileage in preparation for the 26.2-mile test of endurance. Incorporating long training runs into the regimen that are unique in some way helps runners to avoid "staleness" in the last month or two of training. The 53rd commencement of Sisters High School was the largest ever as 114 students made the partial transition from school years to adulthood on Thursday, June 7 at the high school gymnasium. An additional 11 students completed graduation requirements, but were not present for the ceremony. Close to 300 skiers ventured up the McKenzie Pass for the John Craig Memorial Ski Race and Mail Carry on Saturday, March 24. From Olympians to recreational skiers, the event offered something for everyone. Events included races of 20 kilometers in both classic and freestyle, a 10-kilometer classic, a junior 5-kilometer classic, a 3-kilometer kids classic, and the 30-kilometer mail carry that passes the grave and memorial of the race's namesake.... It's too early to make predictions about how the boys' and girls' track teams will fare this season, but head coach Bob Johnson is pleased with the work in progress so far. A group of Iowa high school cross-country runners is giving a whole new meaning to the phrase "distance running." Led by their coach Lowell Lyngaas, members of Valley Community High School cross country team and some other runners from the area surrounding Elgin, Iowa, will begin running from Florence, Oregon, back to Iowa, a distance of 1976 miles, starting Sunday, July 23. By the narrowest of margins, the Lady Outlaws track team claimed its first ever Capital Conference title at the district meet held at Molalla High School May 19 and 20. Sisters nipped Cascade 147.5 to 147 in the closest finish ever in the history of the meet -- and in the 25 year career of head coach Bob Johnson. Participants were treated to a beautiful spring morning Saturday, April 8, for the fourth Kevin Johnson Memorial Run held at Sisters High School. Kevin Johnson graduated in 1993 from Sisters High School and died after being hit by a motorcycle in 1996. The event is sponsored each year by the high school leadership class to raise funds for a scholarship honoring Kevin. Young Sisters wrestlers learned some new moves and strategies during the Christmas break at a SOAR-sponsored wrestling clinic December 28, led by ex-Stanford wrestler Jeff Grant. Grant, a 1993 graduate of South Albany High School, was the Pac 10 runner-up at 167 pounds in 1998 and has stayed involved as a coach and competitor since graduating from Stanford. Andrew Stanfield has taken over the reigns of the Outlaws wrestling team for the 1999-2000 season. Stanfield is taking over a program that has battled low turnout for the past few years, yet he understands that it takes time, patience and enthusiasm to help the program grow.
