You may never look at the barista behind the counter of your favorite coffee shop the same way again after watching any episode of "The Barista Times." This quirky short-sketch comedy series, which is set to premiere on July 5 at the Volcanic Theatre Pub in Bend and on YouTube, was filmed entirely inside Sisters Coffee Co. at night using local talent and resources. It all started because the two Sisters Coffee baristas and siblings Nathan and Emily Woodworth were looking for... Full story
You know how you sometimes read an article about some disease, and you start thinking you have all the symptoms so you must have that disease? This month is dedicated to Mental Health Awareness, and I was just looking at an infographic someone shared on Facebook titled "Facing Mental Illness" and I realized, OMG, we're all crazy! One in 17 Americans live with a serious mental illness, 6.1 million are bipolar, 15.7 million suffer from depression, 1 in 5 children have had a seriously debilitating mental disorder, 9.6 million... Miss Jenni, beloved mascot of Habitat for Humanity ReStore for the past seven years, passed away quietly in the arms of store manager Robin Tawney at Sisters Veterinary Clinic with long-time Habitat volunteer Russell Williams at her side. She was about 17 years old. Miss Jenni was adopted at a Bend Spray & Neuter clinic that was held at the old ReStore location. She happened to be in a cage sitting next to Tawney's desk and kept whispering, "Pick me! Pick me!" And Robin did.... Full story
Members of the Rotary Club of Sisters had the pleasure of hosting a group of visitors from Denmark as part of the Rotary Group Study Exchange (GSE) program. Their tour also included visits to Rotary clubs in Eugene, Grants Pass, Roseburg, Coos Bay, Brookings, and Bend. The spring program at Black Butte School (BBS) last week was all about art and music. This school year, architect and designer Wendy von Kalinowksi introduced the children to the art of Leonardo da Vinci and the geodesic domes of visionary Buckminster Fuller, which was evidenced in the artwork they produced for the show. They also dissected the Mona Lisa and created their own creative versions. A silent auction raised just over $1,000 to help fund Wendy's Master Artist & Designers Program. Carol Dixon, lead teacher and... Full story
When Joni Stengel, first-grade teacher at Sisters Elementary School (SES), asked her class who would like to be the next student to read a book to his or her peers on the radio, "almost all of them raised their hands." Their enthusiasm comes from their experiences last March when this enriching opportunity to encourage young readers was launched. Michael Richards, general manager of KZSO radio in Sisters, encouraged Stengel and her class to help him create Sisters Student... Full story
With only the power of a light bulb, KZSO radio (94.9 LP-FM) is coming back from a near-death experience and lighting up the airwaves around Sisters with music, news, weather and local information, 24-7. The low-power FM community radio station license is owned by the Sisters School District and overseen by Superintendent Jim Golden. The original intention of KZSO was to provide local high school students with access to creative inventions using the broadcast medium of radio. Golden met Michael Richards at a Sisters Rotary... Sisters community radio station KZSO is premiering its talk show line-up on Saturday, May 3, with local host Kelsey Collins talking about life - life in Sisters, life in general, being human, asking questions we all ask ourselves and want to know about others. "I want to inspire people to look inside themselves and to think beyond themselves," says Collins. "Do we ever stop to think about where our ideas, thoughts, opinions come from? Why some people are racist or sexist,... Full story
My best friend just had her second mastectomy last week. In the last two years, she's had her gall bladder removed, a lumpectomy, a mastectomy and now this one. She says the good news is that she's lost 20 pounds and can see her toes again! She has several messages on her cell phone asking her to call another oncologist for follow-up. She's procrastinating. "It's not in my lymph nodes so I'm not going for radiation or chemo," she says. "I'm done with the medical stuff." She insists she's going to eat better, exercise more,... Full story
Kelsey Collins, M.A., meets her clients where they are - not just where they live (yes, she makes house calls), but where they are physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. She begins with what is happening in their lives now, what stories they tell over and over, then goes back to the source. She says most people are aware of their feelings and what they are doing, but not of how their thoughts affect their health. She helps them make the connection and begin to... Full story
I had the sad experience of losing my best friend and companion of 10 years 15 months ago but I've managed to turn that into a positive. Spirit was an Aussie-chocolate lab with a personality that drew everyone to her. She always carried one of her stuffed animals in her mouth when we walked around Sisters. People would stop their cars or walk across the street to say hello to her. One day she was carrying her mallard duck and a man walking by commented, "I see she caught her breakfast! Good dog." It was her job to put a... Full story
Be prepared to pay another three cents to mail a letter starting January 26. The U.S. Postal Service recently announced the largest rate hike in 11 years, which will be in effect for two years, to give the service a temporary infusion of extra revenue to help it recoup losses it suffered as a result of the economic downturn of 2008-2011. Since 2006, the agency has been required to limit rate increases to the rate of inflation, unless regulators approved more, in order to prod the Postal Service to cut costs and to benefit... As I'm writing this, I'm looking at the next rung on the ladder knowing I have to take the next step tomorrow ... 71 ... 72. OMG, how did this happen? A minute ago I was 22 and had my whole life in front of me. Now ... not so much. Somehow in my mind I'm still 22, but then I pass by a mirror and wonder who that gray-haired, wrinkled old lady is. It's scary, but I have to admit: It be me. Always athletic - an avid water-skier, state-champion swimmer in high school, SCUBA diver - rarely got out of the water before I was 22.... Full story
After a successful open house at Sisters Park & Recreation District on September 4, SAGE (Sisters Activities, Gatherings & Enrichment) opened its door to Sisters seniors the following week to its regular schedule on Wednesday afternoons. There was a group of Mexican Train domino players who were looking for a new place to blow off steam and seem to have found it at SAGE. Newcomers who wanted to join in were instructed and soon became part of many exciting rounds. Linda... Full story
Qi (energy) gong (work), which originated in China about 5,000 years ago, is similar to tai chi and shares aspects of other energy work, like yoga and reiki, but is based on Chinese medicine theories (like those that acupuncture uses). Joyce Brown, who has been teaching qigong for nine years at Central Oregon Community College, Sisters Athletic Club, Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD), and privately, describes "Soaring Crane Qigong," as a full form of energy work. Master Chen, who brought the form to the U.S. directly... Full story
Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD) is opening the doors of its new clubhouse for active adults and seniors in their building across the parking lot west of Sisters High School at 1750 W. McKinney Butte on Wednesday, September 4, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. There is a growing population of active adults and seniors in Sisters who have no place to meet up or hang out. There is no Jimmy's Drive-in. There are no sock hops, no American Bandstand. There are no drag races down Main Street. Sisters needs a place for older adults... Full story
Making new friends and spreading the word about Sisters Trails Alliance brought an adventurous group together last month at Sisters Habitat for Humanity ReStore for a five-mile hike on the Peterson Ridge Trail. After a brief talk by our trail guide Ken Serkownek about trail hiking and a look at the map of the Peterson Ridge Trail, the group car-pooled to the trailhead off Elm Street. Ken pointed out the trail markings and crossover connectors along the way where people c... Full story
