  • Don't look the other way

    Ed Protas|Updated Jul 22, 2014

We can't keep turning our heads. I am a cyclist. I currently own and ride four bikes; road, mountain, street, and racing (time trial). During the last 10 years, I have bought and sold seven others. I own a fair amount of spandex, and I wear it when I ride. Before retiring, I commuted by bike for several years. In July I am glued to the flat screen for the three weeks of the Tour de France. I think cycling is cool. Now you know where I am coming from, right? I stand firmly against the construction of the paved trails... Full story

  • The City and its critics - a reply

    Ed Protas|Updated May 20, 2014

I applaud last week's Nugget editorial concerning the City of Sisters' leadership's continued refusal to provide digital recordings of public meetings on the City's website. Our local editor has a unique position in the community to hold city officials accountable, and should exercise that prerogative more often. There is nothing wrong with pointing out bad governance. But the editorial came with a defense of City leadership from its "most vociferous critics," of which I am clearly one. The Nugget editor has no greater or les... Full story

  • Leave Creekside Campground alone

    Ed Protas|Updated Feb 18, 2014

The proposed renovation of the Creekside Campground gives every appearance of another Milo Minderbinder Enterprise. Milo Minderbinder, some of you may recall, was a character of fiction in Joseph Heller's book Catch-22. Minderbinder conceived of every possible way to turn things into money-making ventures. He was all about getting the money, and his plans bordered on insanity. The campground adjacent to Creekside Park is a pretty nice place. I have backpacked, toured by bicycle, and camped in Oregon, Washington, California,... Full story

  • The right to keep and bear arms

    Ed Protas|Updated Jan 8, 2013

It's estimated there are as many as 300 million guns in the US; that's about one for every citizen, and the number increases daily. It's unlikely that any meaningful "gun control" will be acceptable to those who believe it is their right to keep and bear arms, and it's unlikely that any acceptable gun control will have much impact on keeping weapons away from individuals with a deranged mind. The Second Amendment simply states "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people... Full story

  • Fairness matters

    Ed Protas|Updated Mar 6, 2012

Common to Americans across the political spectrum are the shared values of equality and fairness. We don't like a seeing a double standard being applied, no matter who the recipient might be, and when we do we feel a sense of violation. This is the way I feel about the treatment that Ky Karnecki, who owns the Wild Mountain Jerky roadside stand, has received in his dealings with the City of Sisters. In the name of full disclosure, I don't really know Ky; we met for the first time just a few weeks ago when I became interested... Full story

  • Formula food battle will shape Sisters’ future

    Ed Protas|Updated May 10, 2005

“There’s a battle outside and it is ragin’. It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls…” These lines, written by Bob Dylan more than 40 years ago, very much describe the current events in Sisters. The battle in this case is the future of our community. The planning commission for the City of Sisters has been working to propose a new ordinance, with a recommendation to the city council that it be adopted into the Comprehensive Plan. The primary purpose of this ordinance is to control and limit the future development... Full story
