Horses may no longer be welcome in the Tollgate subdivision west of Sisters. An ad-hoc committee formed by the Tollgate Property Owners' Association Board of Directors recently proposed phasing out all horses within Tollgate. The committee sent a letter and survey to Tollgate homeowners a few weeks ago, asking for their opinions on the matter. Tollgate's Covenants, Codes and Restrictions (CC&R) have allowed horses since the inception of the subdivision 28 years ago. However, the letter states that Tollgate has become more of... Full story
Inside the Sisters Rodeo arena is a maelstrom of cowboy hats, Wranglers and belt buckles the size of license plates. Twelve-year-olds with programs hound every person that enters. Most buy one, probably as much for Dennis McGregor's cover art of world-class bull fighters Rob Smets and Rowdy Barry as for the information inside. The clamor inside renders an air of excitement for this, the final day of the 60th annual Sisters Rodeo. Smets and Barry, the bullfighting stars of this year's show, sit at a folding table by the... Excitement permeated the air at the Sisters Rodeo Grounds even before the Battle of the Bulls began Saturday, August 22. The near-capacity crowd murmured in anticipation over the country/rock 'n' roll blaring from the speakers above the center of the arena. When it began to drizzle a half an hour before the show started, few ran for the car to snatch a raincoat or umbrella; most sat unfazed, knowing that the mud just makes things more interesting. The ugly beasts that the cowboys were waiting to ride moaned and thrashed in... Full story

But the entertainment is what draws the fans, and there was plenty of it in this year's show, June 12-14. Even before the events started, there was plenty of action, with the Pepsi girls flying synchronized around the arena on beautiful horses and rodeo queens waving and smiling and showing the beauty and skill that earned them their titles. A quiet moment was struck... Full story
