  • Fallen firefighter honored

    Eric Pierce. photo provided Eric Pierce, 21, of Sisters, died on Monday, August 4, from injuries sustained in a single vehicle accident the previous evening in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Pierce was a Firefighter T-1 (Squad Boss) for GFP Enterprises, Inc., a private wildland firefighting contractor based in Sisters (see related story). He excelled as a Class B Sawyer. Pierce, the son of Paula and Tom Pierce of Sisters, graduated from Sisters High School, Class of 2000. A memorial service was held on Saturday, August 9 at Paula... Full story

  • Quilt show has another big day

    The 2003 Sisters Quilt Show unfurled Saturday, July 12, blanketing the heart of Sisters with breathtaking evidence that the art and craft of quilting is flourishing. As if to celebrate, the weather was gorgeous. Even the smoke from the Link Fire was kept away most of the day by winds that stirred and fluttered the quilts. Sisters had done her homework to accommodate the crowds. The new Barclay Park provided a pleasant respite with its convenient restrooms.     Willie Carl Tindal Four generations of Dorothy Gridley's family have fought for freedom. Her father, William Carl Tindal, served in World War I. In 1917 he was a private in Company L, 144th Infantry, in the United States Army. Elmer Dale Gridley, the love of her life, swept her off her feet at a cowboy dance in Culver City. The year was 1945.     Senoras, senoritas, y senors flowed into a little piece of Mexico Saturday evening, May 3, for a Cinco de Mayo fiesta fantastica. Sisters Organization for Activities and Recreation (SOAR) hosted the fundraising event held at the Sisters Rodeo grounds. Creating defensible space around your home can give firefighters a chance to save it when fire intrudes as it did during the Cache Mountain fire at Black Butte Ranch last summer.     GFP Fire Services, headquartered in Sisters, has deployed three 20-member crews to aid in the recovery of space shuttle parts in eastern Texas, following the explosion of the Challenger. The location is roughly 150 miles northeast of Houston, where the teams will work an area of approximately 300 square miles.
