Riding a bike for 508 miles, virtually nonstop, in under 34 hours with a headwind through Death Valley, California, in blistering heat and achieving 35,000 feet in total elevation gain will do that to a person. Sisters High School junior Rosita Rerat was airlifted from the Three Sisters Wilderness on Friday morning, October 18. She became ill while preparing to hike with a group of fellow students on the annual Interdisciplinary Environmental Expedition (IEE) class trip. "Rosita's group had already spent a night out there," said her mother Kristine Rerat. "She felt faint as they were getting ready to go in the morning. SOAR staff and volunteers at the rest station on Highway 20 and Camp Sherman Road. The First Annual Sisters Bike Festival, held on September 21 and 22, was deemed a success by participants and organizers. Saturday's activities in-cluded three rides of differing lengths and a children's bicycle safety program. A barbecue and prize giving were held in the evening at the completion of the day's events. Dr. Little Liedblad and friends. Broken Top Veterinary Clinic is Sisters' newest animal care facility. Located on Highway 20 just east of town, the clinic is owned by Dr. Little Liedblad. A resident of Oregon for nearly 30 years, Liedblad graduated from Washington State University in 1985. "I wanted to be a vet since I was knee-high to a bullfrog," she said. Ellen Betker with "Let's Boogie." Ellen Betker has some far-reaching international connections. She is the national support team coordinator for the sport of endurance riding, working through the United States Equestrian Team. Betker's job is to organize the squad of American helpers who will travel to Spain in September to assist at the World Equestrian Games Endurance Ride. The Outlawed Livestock Club turned in great performances at the Deschutes County Fair. The Outlawed Livestock Club, a 4-H group of Sisters students, made a good showing at the recent Deschutes County Fair. The club has 20 members, 19 of which raise and show pigs. Monica Offield has a goat kid which she will show in future years in dairy goat classes. Pigs are shown in classes for market conformation, breeding and showmanship. Sisters residents living in the Crossroads or Tollgate subdivisions can rest assured that they will be well informed during a fire emergency. The recent Cache Mountain fire gave area residents a wake-up call about preparedness and the homeowners associations of both subdivisions were right on top of things. Jim and Judi Knapp hosted an afternoon of free equine entertainment on Saturday, August 3, at the Willows Ranch, home of the Knapp Friesian Horses. The display of horsemanship thrilled the audience of several hundred. The event was an opportunity to show locals the magical entertainment routines which the Knapp Friesians perform around the country. Krista Pagano earned a championship ribbon at the Deschutes County Fair. The Cloverdale Livestock Club had a successful run at last week's Deschutes County Fair. The 19 members, who are in grades 4-12, all show sheep in the 4-H fair, with member Aubyn Geser also showing her dog. Preparing and showing their animals in classes for market lambs, breeding ewes, and in showmanship kept the members busy. Healing Reins Therapeutic Riding Center in Bend is quietly going about the business of changing lives. The center's home is a beautiful facility east of Sisters. Each week, children and adults with differing types of physical, social, and mental disabilities come for an hour of riding therapy. When the riders arrive at the center, they are met by their instructor, their volunteer helpers and most importantly, their equine therapist. Myrna Dow at work at her gallery. Art aficionados in Sisters now have another venue in which to indulge their passion. The High Desert Gallery is on Elm Street and W. Main Avenue, across from the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center. Opened in April by Myrna Dow, the gallery features the work of nine artists. Dr. Carl Berg is the new veterinarian/owner of the Sisters Veterinary Clinic. A native of small-town Kansas, he graduated from the Kansas State University vet school in 1998. His first job was at a mixed practice clinic in Arizona, where a co-worker extolled the virtues of Central Oregon. Berg moved in 1999, and soon he had a dream to own his own clinic. Clay Maier displayed his wild horse photography at Art Stroll. Local art buffs and artists had an opportunity to rub shoulders at the tenth annual Sisters Art Stroll, held Friday, June 21. Forty businesses stayed open until 8 p.m. in an open-house atmosphere, providing a forum for the artists and a chance for store owners to mingle with their customers. After 24 years of serving the community, Dr. Sharon Sharpnack and Dr. Susan Conner of Sisters Veterinary Clinic are entering semi-retirement. This was confirmed by the recent move into larger premises just a few doors down Main Avenue. Sisters pet owners have long had access to a local feed store. Library volunteers share hobbies. The staff of Sisters Library honored their volunteers at an afternoon function on Thursday, April 25. The event took place during National Volunteers Week. "Each year we honor our volunteers who give a lot of time and effort to the library," said Sandy McDonald, library assistant and volunteer coordinator. "They are super people we couldn't do without." Sisters High School's newest team is off to a flying start. The mountain bike team is open to anyone with a passion for mountain biking and is under the supervision of teacher Mark Keel. There is no special criteria for joining. "Members can be non-competitive and just come to our training rides, but competition is available for those who want it," said Keel.
