    Leslie Brown|Updated Jan 30, 1996

A 22- year- old Salem man died sometime Saturday night, January 27, after crashing into a tree at Hoodoo Ski Area. The body of James Scariot was recovered at 6:20 a.m. Sunday after an all- night search by Scariot's companions and members of the Santiam Ski Patrol. Their efforts had been hampered by a heavy snowfall. Scariot's friends said they last saw him at 8:45 p.m. Saturday as the group skied the Powder Valley Trail run. • District reopens after government shutdown

    Leslie Brown|Updated Jan 16, 1996

Forest Service workers at the Sisters Ranger District returned January 8 from what was probably their longest Christmas vacation since school days. But the shutdown of federal government offices for 19 days, while Congress and the Clinton administration tangled in a budget impasse, was hardly a time of unalloyed enjoyment for the foresters. They are now making up for lost time on several projects delayed somewhat by the furlough. District Information Assistant Tori Roberts said the situation wasn't as bad as it might have bee... Full story

  • Metolius Doug stands as a silent sovereign

    Leslie Brown|Updated Nov 21, 1995

Camp Sherman residents are proud to announce they have a new national champion living among them. They've been rooting for him all along, but now that he has achieved high honor, there won't be any parades. No one will fashion a crown, and a ceremonial belt isn't practical for one whose waist measurement is 24 feet. Actually, the Camp Sherman folks prefer to keep their new champ a well- guarded secret, so don't ask for his address. He can't give autographs anyway, nor will he speak to visitors. This illustrious resident of... Full story

Interested groups and individuals have until February 16, 1996, to comment on the draft, which is contained in a very detailed, 234- page document mailed recently to "Metolius enthusiasts." The Draft EIS presents a preferred alternative plan gleaned primarily from five original alter... Full story

  • Thick- skinned citizens needed in Camp Sherman

    Leslie Brown|Updated Nov 14, 1995

The Camp Sherman Local Advisory Committee to the Jefferson County Planning Commission has been one member short since March. More recently, the planning commission member representing Camp Sherman, Suttle Lake and Blue Lake resigned. He has not been replaced. Why? "We have advertised (in The Nugget), we have solicited, we have begged for replacements," said County Judge Dan Ahern, "but we cannot get them." Land- use and zoning issues have resulted in controversy in the Camp Sherman area in recent years. "People are unwilling... Full story

  • Hasty Team trains for swift water rescues

    Leslie Brown|Updated Oct 31, 1995

Even with the sun shining on a late October Saturday, the water temperature of the Metolius River near Wizard Falls Trout Hatchery was a daunting 45 degrees. Yet, for 13 members of the all- volunteer Camp Sherman Hasty Team of Jefferson County Search and Rescue, it would take more than a frigid Fahrenheit reading to cool their mutual desire to river swim the Metolius. Each one plunged into the turquoise water of the main channel -- at that point a narrow, deep, swift- flowing stream -- and with feet up and forward, steered... Full story

  • Council mulls new street addresses

    Leslie Brown|Updated Oct 31, 1995

The Sisters City Council has embarked on a new street numbering and addressing system for the community in the interests of public safety. At its October 26 meeting, the council heard City Planner Neil Thompson bid for consistency, a virtue lacking in the present numbering system. Some houses bear odd numbers on the even-numbered side of the street, and vice versa, while other numbers don't progress consistently down the blocks. Gary Frazee, director of public works, noted that entire blocks are out of synch: "There are three... Full story

The proposed vegetation treatment near Milepost 88 should provide adequate long- term sunlight on a stretch of pavement which has been the site of numerous winter accidents and some fatalities in the past, owing to unexpected ice and snow on the surface. Work could start as early as this fall unless the Forest Service decision is... Full story
