  • An open letter to Kamala Harris

    Lisa May|Updated Nov 19, 2024

Dear Madam Vice President, How could the election have turned out like this? Many people have expressed surprise and dismay at the results of the 2024 election, particularly in our county, Deschutes, where 53 percent of the population voted for you and in our state, Oregon, where over 55 percent of the population voted for you. I have been reflecting on my own personal view of this election and I would like to share it with you because I do not think the thoughts are mine... Full story

  • Just Like Us: Miriam

    Lisa May|Updated May 14, 2024

In a previous column, I adopted a view of literature as a time machine that enables us to view people and places from the past. That distant culture might look a little different from ours but, at a heart level, those people aren't all that different from us. This time we are going to crank the controls on the time machine back about 3,500 years ago. Through the pages of the Bible, we will take a look at a woman named Miriam. Miriam's people, the Hebrews, have been living in... Full story

  • From the Front Desk

    Lisa May|Updated Apr 11, 2024

In my role at the front desk of The Nugget I get to handle a wide variety of tasks, from managing databases for subscriptions and classifieds to designing the weekly Announcements page and even a bit of display ad design. But there is no aspect of my job that I enjoy more than interacting with the people of Sisters. Some folks just come in to The Nugget to visit one of the staff members and others bring news in need of reporting. Some people stopping by the office are...

  • Just Like Us: Matthew

    Lisa May|Updated Apr 2, 2024

Have you ever wished you could travel through time? What would it have been like to set out on the Oregon Trail in a covered wagon in 1840? What was life really like in a European castle in the Middle Ages… or in the villages outside? What if we could actually climb into a time machine to experience life alongside the people of another time period? I suggest that there is a sense in which we can. For thousands of years humans have seen the value of recording their stories i... Full story

  • Sisters grad works on data centers

    Lisa May|Updated Mar 26, 2024

Twenty years ago, your living room shelves and closets may have been filled with VHS tapes and DVDs of favorite movies. Finding enough room to store the growing collection was problematic. Perhaps a few readers still insist on storing some of these old favorites today, even without the devices needed to play them back. But now that we are more than two decades into the 21st century, most of us watch digital movies by streaming them from Netflix, Amazon Prime, or another... Full story

  • Connecting neighbors

    Lisa May|Updated Nov 7, 2023

At The Nugget Newspaper, I have the privilege of manning the front desk and greeting community members as they walk in the door or call on the phone. This public contact is actually my favorite part of the job. Even after living in Sisters for 14 years and having kids in Sisters schools dating back 18 years, I have never had the opportunity to interact with as many people from Sisters as in this role at The Nugget. I continue to meet people that, in some cases, have lived in... Full story

  • Joy to the world

    Lisa May|Updated Dec 23, 2020

“Joy to the world, the Lord is come!” So begins one of the most popular Christmas hymns of all time. And joy is certainly an appropriate response to God coming to earth. The angel who announced the birth of Jesus Christ to the shepherds said, “Behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” The angel announced joy, so it is no wonder those celebrating the birth o... Full story

  • Christmas: The birth of Jesus Christ

    Lisa May|Updated Dec 8, 2020

Christmas is the sacred day on which Christians celebrate the birthday of the Lord Jesus Christ. But what is the primary focus of that celebration? Certainly, for Christians, the primary focus is not family, food, or festivities — as worthy as those things are of enjoying. If a Christian’s desire is to focus the Christmas celebration on the birth of Jesus Christ, exactly what are we excited about? It’s pretty exciting that a multitude of angels showed up in the ski... Full story

  • Christmas: Christian or cultural?

    Lisa May|Updated Dec 1, 2020

Christmas is the sacred day on which Christians celebrate the birthday of the Lord Jesus Christ. Christmas is also a cultural celebration of love, family, giving, good cheer, eating and all things winter. The mixed ownership of this holiday can create some confusion and disagreement in the Christian church and in the wider culture. So where and when did this holiday have its origins? Was there a time when Christmas was purely a holy day? For the first three centuries after... Full story

  • Attorney launches practice in Sisters

    Lisa May|Updated Jun 30, 2020

Planning for one’s own death is not an activity that most of us look forward to. Yet if you have spent a lifetime saving, investing, building a business, purchasing life insurance or otherwise providing for the future, do you want the State of Oregon to decide how to distribute your assets to your heirs? Or would you prefer to make those decisions yourself? In addition, you may desire to make the administration of your estate as easy as possible for your loved ones during a ti... Full story

  • Longing for our eternal home

    Lisa May|Updated Jun 16, 2020

This is the second of two columns on the disruption of church services during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a previous column, we looked at the definition and goals of the church in the New Testament. In New Testament language, the church is not a building, but an assembly of people. Many of the goals of this assembly can be met in small groups, sometimes even more successfully than in a larger church gathering. So why do we need church buildings at all? Can’t we accomplish all t... Full story

  • Ministry trip extended by COVID-19

    Lisa May|Updated Jun 16, 2020

Sisters resident Gary Radmacher is in Ghana, West Africa — a trip that has gone beyond his expectations in more ways than one. The trip was planned for eight weeks. It has now extended to 14 weeks and Radmacher has yet to return home. Gary and his wife, Barby, moved to Sisters six years ago, coming here to join with a local pastor in ministry to Latin American countries. His full-time ministry has spanned nearly five decades serving as a youth pastor, solo pastor, senior... Full story

  • The church is not a building — but we need to gather

    Lisa May|Updated Jun 9, 2020

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted nearly all of our life routines and the weekly rhythms of the church have not been exempted. Leaders at every church location have been forced to make decisions about how to continue worship, teaching, and fellowship in light of concerns over spreading the virus. Here in Sisters we have seen YouTube services, Zoom meetings, Facebook livestreams, church at the rodeo grounds, parking lot services, and backyard church gatherings. Because we... Full story
