Sisters High School alum Kaci Oerter has a new business in town: K.O. Photography, at 371 W. Cascade Ave. Open since the first of June, she does every kind of photography you can think of, from family events to weddings to pet portraits. Her bread and butter of late has been "Old Time" portraits, done in her Cascade Avenue studio. She prints her own photos in-house, and can handle prints up to 11 by 14 inches. Last Monday - two or three weeks early - the much-anticipated Three Creeks Brewing Company opened for business at FivePine Lodge & Conference Center in Sisters. "We originally planned to open sometime in August," owner Wade Underwood said, "but we were ready, so we (quietly) opened up last week, and we've been slammed ever since." Sisters area residents Teresa and Dean Helmick have opened the Nine Peaks adult care home, seven miles out of town on West Cascade Avenue. Teresa, the primary caregiver at Nine Peaks, has been a Licensed Massage Therapist since 1997. She has been working with geriatric clients for a large part of that time. Her husband, Dean, has been a contractor in the area for a number of years, and hopes to build two more adult care homes in Sisters soon. Now through August 14, Sisters Art Works is hosting "Reride," a show of Nancy Becker and Mark Gillem's recycled, glass-and-steel, functional art. Becker has been creating glass art for over 30 years in Southern California, Portland, and in the Sisters area. The concept for her current project came about through her frustration at throwing away bucket loads of glass leftovers from her art. "To be wasteful with materials bothers me," said Becker. Sisters Art Works will be hosting a series of art shows this summer to highlight some local (and not-so-local) talent. From July 1 through 13, the feature will be fabric postcards created to benefit the "Wendy's Wish" fund. Over 1,000 fabric postcards have been made for silent auction to benefit the fund, and 50 of them (framed by Myrna Dow of High Desert Gallery) will be on display in the entry to Sisters Art Works. Sisters area residents who recycle regularly - and judging by the volume of traffic at the new recycling station in the industrial area, there are quite a few - have probably noticed that now, the "commingled" category includes everything except corrugated cardboard and glass. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) studies show that when consumers need to do less sorting of recyclables at home, participation in recycling goes up. Thousands of steelhead fry are swimming in Whychus Creek in Sisters. Last Thursday and Friday, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) released over a quarter-million steelhead fry into Whychus Creek at several locations, from just upstream of Sisters, downstream to Lake Billy Chinook. Folks in Sisters have an additional establishment to choose from when considering a night out on the town. Dave and Christine Lentz are very excited about the opening of their latest business venture, Scoots Bar & Grill, at 175 N. Larch St., in the location of the old Sisters Smokehouse Corral. Sisters resident and new-business owner Tom Simpson is a lucky man. He's in his second month as the proprietor of "Three Sisters Automotive." It had to happen sometime: three of Sisters' popular dining and drinking establishments are going "Smoke-Free." Bronco Billy's, Coyote Creek Café and The Gallery have all announced they'll be making the change on Mother's Day, May 11 - over seven months before required to do so by Oregon law.
