The Sisters Outlaws girls tennis squad started their week with a 5-3 win at home over North Marion on Tuesday, April 18, and three days later fell 2-6 to Redmond. The Outlaws fought off the cold and notched a dominant win over the Lady Huskies at home in Tuesday’s tennis action. Juhree Kizziar (No. 1 singles) dominated her match with great serve speed and placement for a 6-0, 6-0, sweep over Allyson Chamberland. The boys lacrosse squad travelled to Forest Grove (FG) on Friday, April 22, and defeated the Vikings 10-7. They were short players earlier in the week, and had to forfeit their game against Hillsboro. Gus Patton got the Outlaws’ scoring started with a goal in the first minute and a half of Friday’s game against the Vikings. The boys tennis squad lost their matches against Summit and Crook County last week, but did record some individual wins. Dominic Pulver was the lone Outlaw winner at Summit on Monday, April 10. Pulver was composed throughout his match and defeated Jackson Rylan in two straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. The Outlaws started their week with a 3-5 loss at home against Summit on Monday, April 10, and three days later dropped their first conference match of the season; a 3-5 loss to Crook County. In Sisters’ matchup against Summit on Monday, teams played in horrible conditions. It was windy and dirt was flying due to trucks moving soil near the tennis courts. The Outlaws played hard the first half against Ridgeview on Thursday, April 13, but couldn’t keep up in the second half and lost the contest 11-5. Sisters started the game with 13 players — the most they’ve had all season — which gave them three subs to back up their first middle line. The Ravens scored in the first thirty seconds on a fast break after an Outlaw turnover, but a minute later Evan Martin evened the score on a nice catch and finish shot. Several players from the Sisters High School soccer team have banded together and formed the Oregon Outlaws Football (Soccer) Club and will compete at the Laila Cup in Hamburg, Germany, July 24-28. Two hundred teams from 20 different nations, including Sweden, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, and the United States will be in attendance and will come together to celebrate one the biggest youth international football (soccer) tournaments in Germany. The girls tennis squad posted two more wins on the tennis courts last week, which put them at 3-0 in league play and 5-1 overall. On Monday, April 3, Sisters earned a 6-2 win at The Dalles and three days later tallied a 7-1 victory at home against Madras. The Outlaws boys tennis squad started their week at home on Monday, April 3 against The Dalles — under cold and windy and sometimes snowy conditions — and came away with a 1-7 loss. Three days later the Outlaws traveled to Madras, where Jude Parzybok came away as the lone winner. The boys lacrosse squad kicked off their season at home on Saturday, April 1 against Chiawana, a team out of Pasco, Washington. The team made the trip to Central Oregon on their spring break to play Sisters on Saturday and Ridgeview on Sunday. Sisters had to cancel their first two games, one due to inclement weather, and the other because too many players were gone over spring break. The Lady Outlaws started their week on the road with a 3-5 loss to Ridgeview. Their match that was to be held at Redmond on Thursday, March 23, was cancelled due to inclement weather conditions. In Tuesday’s match against the Ravens, the Outlaws were missing five of their varsity players due to spring break, and as a result had to default on No. 4 doubles. The girls tennis squad kicked off their season with an 8-0 shutout at Mountain View on Thursday, March 16, and a day later posted a 6-2 win at home against Crook County. In Thursday’s action junior Juhree Kizziar (No. 1 singles) was challenged by Mt. View’s senior Reeve Mikalson, who has improved her play since last year. Mikalson’s consistent attacking forehand won her many points, but Kizziar adjusted her game with underspin and lobs to win the match with scores of 6-4, 7-6, and a tiebreaker of 7-3. The Outlaws had four players earn All-League honors, including Mehkye Froehlich, Kale Gardner, Adam Maddox-Castle, and Jessey Murillo. Froehlich (senior) was a First Team All-League selection and had an outstanding season for the Outlaws. Mehkye led the Outlaws with 31 steals this season, which was almost double the next player. He also led the team in scoring (10.8 points per game) during league play, including a 22-point performance against La Pine at home on senior night. Last year the boys tennis team only had four players on their roster, and this year they are up to nine. New Coach David Rowell has hopes for the future of boys tennis, and plans to add players to the roster and build the program into one that will be competitive in league play. The Outlaws return only two to the varsity squad this year, seniors Matthew Riehle and Zenus Ortega. Riehle is a team captain who is tall and aggressive at the net and has a killer overhead shot. The Outlaws boys tennis started their season with a home match against Mountain View on Thursday, March 16. Jude Parzybok (No. 1 singles) played a great first match of the season even though he lost the match 4-6, 0-6 to Devin Merchant. Coach David Rowell noted that Parzybok played an excellent match and had great ground strokes, but that the double faults hurt him. The second set was much closer than the 0-6 score makes it appear. David Rowell was recently hired as the new head coach for the boys tennis program. Rowell, 26, played competitive soccer since he was 10 years old, and played tennis in high school. Rowell graduated from Canby High School and then attended Oregon State University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s in math in 2018. The Lady Outlaws return 13 players to the varsity squad this season and will add four new players to give extra depth to the team. Last year the team finished third at Districts, and this year they feel they can do even better. The Outlaws Alpine Ski Team raced in the Oregon High School State Championships held at the Hoodoo Ski area Wednesday through Thursday, March 1-3. Despite a lot of new soft snow, which can be problematic for ski racing, the event came off as a big success. Coach Gabe Chladek told The Nugget that throughout the entire event he heard nothing but positive comments and thank-yous from the teams that traveled from out of town. The Lady Outlaws basketball squad had three players earn All-League honorable mention, including Josie Patton, Ashlynn Moffat, and Shae Wyland. Patton was a starter for the Outlaws all four years and this year a team captain. Junior outside hitter Gracie Vohs has verbally committed to play for St. Mary’s College of California, and will officially sign with the college the fall of her senior year. Vohs started to play organized volleyball in second grade and has played ever since. Former Sisters High School (SHS) players were a big part of her decision to play the sport. The Outlaws started their week on Wednesday, February 22 with a 41-37 win on the road against Neah-Kah-Nie in the first round of the 3A State Playoffs. Three days later they traveled to Tigard to take on the No.1-ranked Westside Christian Eagles, and fell with a final score of 62-43. The Outlaws (No.3) defeated La Pine (No.4) 65-53 at home on Thursday, February 16, in the first round of the Mountain Valley Conference Playoffs. The Outlaws ski team traveled to Ashland to compete with the southern league in an invitational race held Friday and Saturday, February 17-18. The invitational was a cross-league event, so scores did not apply to season league totals.
