  • Lady Outlaws open season with tough losses

    In basketball action, the Lady Outlaws lost to the two top teams in the state in their season openers — a 54-28 loss at home against Burns on Tuesday, November 30, and two days later a 48-18 loss at Riverdale. Burns was a tough matchup on Tuesday. The Hilanders are traditionally a good basketball team, and last year finished second at state.     The Outlaws return four senior players — Adam Maddox-Castle, Jessey Murillo, Taine Martin, and Mehkye Froehlich — to the boys varsity squad this season. Maddox-Castle and Jessey Murillo have played on the varsity squad since their sophomore year, and will bring leadership, poise, and experience to the team. Maddox-Castle primarily played at point guard in past seasons.     The Sisters Outlaws JV volleyball squad finished their season 10-6, and showed marked improvement from start to finish. One big highlight was winning Silver in the Crook County Tournament.   • Eight Sisters football players named to All-League teams

    Eight Outlaw football players were selected to All-League teams, including junior Justin DeSmet and senior Jessey Murillo, who were First-Team selections. DeSmet, who was also a team captain, earned First-Team Running Back, and First-Team Defensive Back. Justin had 70 carries for 437 yards, two touchdowns, and averaged 6.24 yards per carry.   • Lady Outlaws look forward to successful basketball season

    The Lady Outlaws will return 10 players to their varsity squad this season, including six experienced, veteran seniors. Seniors include Haleigh Froelich, Ellie Mayes, Delaney McAfee, Ashlynn Moffat, Josie Patton, and Hadley Schar. Froelich was a Second-Team, All-Conference pick last year, and will play at post again this year. She runs the court well, is a strong finisher around the basket, and a good rebounder, especially on the offensive boards. Mayes will play at both the guard and wing positions.     The Outlaws soccer squad had four players who earned All-League honors, including Tate Kaczmarek, Gus Patton, and Vincent Christian, who were all First-Team picks. Kaczmarek, senior and co-captain, is a four-year starter and played at forward for the Outlaws. He was the leading goal scorer this year with 17 goals.     The Outlaws JV football squad finished their season with a 3-4 overall record. Twenty-three players were on the roster, and three, including Kayle Mock, Ethan Eby, and Kelvin Parker, saw significant minutes on the varsity squad.   • Josie Patton named Goalkeeper of the Year

    Senior Josie Patton was a First-Team All-League pick and earned top recognition as Goalkeeper of the Year in the All-League voting. Patton has been a four-year starting goalie for the Outlaws, and last year was also named Goalie of the Year in 4A. Coach Brian Holden noted that Patton is a tall player with strong hands and a broad wingspan. She is a dedicated athlete, a positive team leader, and vocal from the back.     The Lady Outlaws had a stellar league season and finished with a 11-1 record — all sweeps, except for two matches. Six Outlaw players stood out and earned All-League recognition — and Coach Rory Rush was named Coach of the Year. It came as no surprise that junior Gracie Vohs, Sisters’ outside hitter and team captain, was a First-Team pick and named Player of the Year.     The Lady Outlaws volleyball squad finished third at the state tournament, held at Springfield High School on Friday and Saturday, November 4-5. Sisters started the tourney with a sweep over the St. Mary Crusaders in the quarterfinals. The first set was back-and-forth until midway through, when the Outlaws pulled ahead and recorded the win.     The Lady Outlaws fell in a heart-breaking loss to the Lady Warriors at Amity High School in the state quarterfinals on Saturday, November 5. Sisters battled hard the entire contest and with 15 minutes left in the game thought they’d scored the go-ahead goal.     The Outlaws football squad lost to No. 4-ranked Banks in a final score of 47-8 in the first round of state playoffs, which was held at Hare Field in Hillsboro. Weather conditions were horrible, as teams battled the cold and stormy weather with incessant rain the entire evening. Banks is a very physical and well-coached team, and dominated the game on both sides of the ball all night long.     The Outlaws boys soccer team faced top-seeded Oregon Episcopal (OE) in the second round of state playoffs without two of their strongest and most experienced players, Aidan Eckert and Vincent Christian, one out due to penalty and the other due to injury.     Sisters’ football squad defeated Harrisburg on the road in a final score of 42-14 on Friday, October 28, in their final league game of the season. With the win the Outlaws (No. 13) are playoff bound; they will compete in the first round against Banks (No. 4) on Friday, November 4 at Banks High School.     The Lady Outlaws volleyball team continued to dominate league play last, week and proved why they’re at the top of the pack. Sisters recorded a sweep on the road over Siuslaw on Monday, October 18, and two days later swept the Hawks at La Pine.     The boys soccer squad entered their final game of the season at home against Central Linn (CL) on Wednesday, October 19, with the conference title on the line. Sisters (No.2) and Central Linn (No.1) both entered the contest with one loss in league play.     The Outlaws soccer program honored seniors Gus Patton, Tate Kaczmarek, Aidan Eckert, Corbin Fredland, Taine Martin, and Zenus Ortega prior to their game against La Pine last week. Patton has been a varsity starter for two years, and this year was a co-captain. Husmann noted that Gus is a strong leader, a special individual, is always positive and works hard, but reminds everyone it’s all about having fun.     The Outlaws football squad lost 20-7 on the road against the Siuslaw Vikings on a very cold and rainy Friday night, October 21. Sisters started out with an interception by Patrick Silva less than five minutes into the contest. They got the ball down to the 45-yard line, but offensive penalties stalled the drive.     The Lady Outlaws soccer squad emerged as conference champs after their 1-0 win over Central Linn (CL) on Wednesday, October 19. But the win and claiming the conference title didn’t come easy. In order for the Outlaws to have a chance, Central Linn had to finish with a tie in their game against Pleasant Hill on Monday, October 17, and then the Outlaws had to beat Central Linn on the road on Wednesday, October 19.     The Lady Outlaws continued to roll over league foes last week, with an 8-0 shutout at home against a young and inexperienced Siuslaw squad on Monday, October 10, and three days later a 3-0 shutout on the road at Santiam Christian.     The Outlaws boys soccer team suffered a tough 2-1 loss at Santiam Christian on Thursday, October 13. Sisters and Santiam Christian both came onto the field focused and ready to play, but seven minutes in the Outlaws had a breakdown in communication on defense, and the Eagles scored.
