The Outlaws boys basketball squad fell 55-47 to Newport at home on Tuesday, January 18, and lost at home three days later against top-ranked Philomath in a final score of 52-24. Sisters knew their match-up against Newport on Tuesday would be a defensive game, and they knew they’d have to defend the three-point line, as the Cubs like to shoot from behind the arc. The Outlaws skiers swept both the boys’ and girls’ races under beautiful and sunny skies, with five racers from each team finishing in the top 10 in the Giant Slalom race held on Saturday, January 22, at Willamette Pass. The Outlaws ski teams raced in a slalom race on a hard, fast surface on Duba’s Descent at Hoodoo on Wednesday, January 12. Conditions were sunny and clear and turned to beautiful starry skies under the night- lights. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams finished strong in the first Emerald League slalom race of the season. The Outlaws dominated play in their 69-36 win at home against the Sweet Home Huskies on Friday, January 14. Three days earlier they kicked off league play with a 49-59 loss at home to the Stayton Eagles. The boys basketball squad defeated the Wolfpack at Caldera in a final score of 49-36 on Saturday, January 9. Their game against Klamath Union that was scheduled for Tuesday, January 4, was cancelled due to inclement weather and plans are to reschedule it at a later date. Saturday’s match-up against the Wolfpack was the first game the Outlaws had played in nine days, and their first game on the road in three weeks. The Lady Outlaws earned a 55-46 win over Caldera’s JV squad on Saturday, January 8. Their roster was reduced to a total of 14 girls due to illness, and the JV game had to be cancelled. Caldera got off to a great start, quickly went up 8-0, and forced the Outlaws to take a time-out to regroup. The Outlaws were able to settle down and refocus, and went on a run that put them on top 14-12 to close out the quarter. The Outlaws alpine ski team raced in a Giant Slalom competition at Willamette Pass on Saturday, January 8, and both the boys and girls teams had great performances in their first race of the season. Twelve schools were represented, but not all fielded full teams. The Sisters boys finished first, Marist was runner-up, and Corvallis finished third. Sisters came out aggressive at the start of the contest and jumped to an early lead thanks to two buckets at the rim from Adam Maddox-Castle. Sisters played extremely well on offense in the first half of the contest and put 26 points on the scoreboard, while the defense held the Lions to 16 points. Both played in all 17 games last season and will be leaders on the team this year. Palanuk is a 6-foot-4-inch wing who will bring versatility to the squad. Chad Rush is the new head coach for the boys varsity basketball program at Sisters High School. He will bring with him personal experience, as well as numerous years of coaching experience. The Lady Outlaws soccer team had nine players selected to all-league teams, including four first-team picks: Josie Patton, Anya Shockley, Hollie Lewis, and Analise Backus. Patton, a junior, was named first-team goalkeeper of the year. Patton and her teammates logged 10 shut-outs on the season, and only allowed six goals during league play. The boys soccer squad had six players named to all-league teams this year, including senior Ricky Huffman and junior Tate Kaczmarek, who were first team picks. Huffman was a four-year starter for the Outlaws and a co-captain this year. He has been the team’s leading scorer the last three seasons and this year posted 14 goals, and tallied four assists. This year’s Sisters High School ski team will field the largest number of racers in Outlaw history. Twenty-seven racers are out for the sport; 14 girls and 13 boys. Head Coach Gabe Chladek and Assistant Coach Rima Givot are excited about the upcoming season as they start their fifth year as the ski team coaches. Sisters ski teams will compete in the newly revitalized Emerald League of the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association this season. The Sisters High School volleyball team had an amazing season this year, and finished second at the State tournament. Seven players were selected to the Oregon West All-League teams, including senior Sydney Myhre and sophomore Gracie Vohs as first-team, all-league picks. Myhre has been a four-year varsity player and this year stepped up as a leader on the court for the Outlaws. The Outlaws girls basketball squad had a great first week of practice, with over 20 girls in the gym every day. Seniors Payden Petterson and Emma Lutz return to the team. Petterson has played on varsity since her freshman year and is a reliable, dependable, perimeter player who will play at the shooting guard position.
