Winter weather turned the highways west of Sisters into a deadly destruction derby last weekend as Sisters and Black Butte Ranch (BBR) emergency personnel responded to a series of accidents. Almost unnoticed, the makeup of vehicle fuel in the state of Oregon is undergoing some significant changes. The changes bring environmental benefits, economic benefits and a reduction on this country's dependence on foreign oil. However, the changes are not without a cost. With some 17 miles of new single-track mountain bike trails proposed for the area south of Sisters near Three Creek Road, horseback riders are concerned that they are being pushed of the trails and out of the woods. That is more a perception than a reality, according to Jeff Sims of the U.S. Forest Service. HB2210, passed by the legislature in the summer of 2007, guarantees ethanol producers market access to every gas tank in Oregon, every vehicle, every boat, every tool. There are no exceptions. Folks in the far northern corner of the Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District like the security provided by the fire station at Squaw Creek Canyon Estates. Last weekend, the fire district honored the family who made it possible to station firefighting equipment in the area, where it can quickly respond to wildfires and other emergencies. The Outlaws wrestling squad placed fourth behind three 5A schools in the 27th annual Nels Ochs Tournament in Madras on Saturday, January 5. Thomas Schantz (189 pounds) led the Outlaws with a second-place finish. Schantz opened the tourney with a first round bye and then recorded a first round fall over Cameron Eisenzimmer of Sandy. The boys basketball team won all three of their games to claim first place at the Sisters Holiday Tournament held December 27-29. Junction City, La Pine, Burns, LaSalle, Tillamook and Mohawk also participated in the annual event. The Outlaws defeated Burns 69-50 in Sisters first game of the tournament. To respond to the recent state ruling that disallows school districts to charge tuition for kindergarten, the Sisters School District is looking at alternative sources for funding its second half-day of all-day kindergarten. According to superintendent Elaine Drakulich, the school district will be able to continue charging tuition throughout the remainder of this school year, but whether or not it can continue to do so next year is still unknown. Clifton E. (Gene) Yates died peacefully Friday, January 4, 2008, in his home. His wife and members of his family were at his bedside. He was born July 27, 1931, in Williford, Arkansas, to Lonnie Ben and Nola Jane (Baird) Yates. Gene and family moved from Arkansas to Powell Butte in 1947 where he completed his schooling in Redmond. The girls basketball team hosted its annual Sisters Holiday Tournament last month. Five teams from around the state, including Junction City, Burns, LaSalle, La Pine and Madras attended the event. Community Mortgage has closed it doors on Hood Avenue. The firm's owner Dan Higgins decided closing the business was his best response to current market conditions.
