    A Tollgate resident called 911 on Saturday morning to report two cougars walking through the yard at 69200 Horseshoe. At one point, the two cougars appeared to be playing with each other in the yard and were small in size, indicating they may be young. The presence of the cougars created a potential close call for one Tollgate resident.   • Schools superintendent Drakulich resigns

    Sisters Schools Superintendent Elaine Drakulich announced Wednesday that she will resign at the end of her three-year contract, which closes June 30. Drakulich told the board at its Wednesday night meeting that she is leaving at the end of her contract to pursue other career opportunities. She did not specify what those opportunities are.   • Brush mowing creates fire buffer

    In spite of winter conditions, the U.S. Forest Service is continuing its proactive fire management program in the wildland forest interface near Sisters. Currently being targeted is a 600-foot-wide strip of forestland running nearly seven miles all the way from behind the Lazy Z Ranch to Gist Road. Some in the U.S. government, military and various Christian leaders also expect it in the near future. I've advised family and friends to store up a month's supply of nonperishable food and water and have an alternative cooking-heating-electrical source.     A smoldering confrontation between the Sisters School Board and the charter Web academy it oversees came to a head Wednesday night as the board voted unanimously to initiate termination of Sisters Web Academy's charter.     Courtney Blust came through as the top individual performer for the Sisters High School Nordic team in an Oregon High School Nordic league skate race held Saturday, January 9, at Virginia Meissner Sno-Park.     The Sisters Charter Academy of Fine Arts (SCAFA) has had its charter contract terminated by the Sisters School District, effective Friday, January 15. The Sisters School Board unanimously affirmed its termination after an appeal hearing at the district offices on Monday afternoon. Board members agreed that SCAFA could not show that it can be financially viable through the rest of this year.     The Medical Teams International (MTI) dental van brought relief to Sisters folks suffering from dental ailments on January 6, in front of the Kiwanis House in downtown Sisters. Doctor Spence Kruger, hygienist Celia Grayson and assistant Debbie Strumbaugh took care of the urgent dental needs of 13 adults.     The Outlaws competed at the Oregon Classics, held at the Redmond Event Center at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds on Friday and Saturday, January 8-9.     Forty-seven Sisters students with one big idea and many small creative projects will feed more than 300 orphans in the civil war-ravaged African country of Liberia this year.
