After falling short by 26 votes in November, the Sisters School District will ask voters again this March to approve a renewal of the local option levy. The levy, with a rate of 75 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation, funds classroom programs to the tune of approximately $1 million. Hikers, cyclists and others who enjoy walking or riding around town rather than driving may soon have a new paved trail to amble along. The City of Sisters voted Thursday night to seek a grant to create a paved trail along Whychus Creek and Highway 20, leading to the FivePine campus at the east end of town. To the Editor: When you walk into our grand Sisters Library you will note a significant change in the location of the "Popular DVDs." They are no longer filed in the usual place in the stacks, but are now shelved next to the checkout and information area. Why? Because some low-life people (NOT library "patrons" I'm sure) have walked out of the library with over 20 of them, and didn't check them out. Todd Jutte thinks he may have launched a revolution in martial arts oriented conditioning last weekend. The lifelong martial arts enthusiast and Brazilian Jujitsu instructor debuted his new training apparatus, the Cross Fitt Crusader, at Cascade Fitness in Sisters on Saturday. She's good at her job, always smiling, helpful and fast on her feet. Last week the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Posts combined to host an open house for area veterans. The purpose of the meeting was to acquaint Sisters veterans with the two organizations and provide veterans with assistance and support. Nearly 50 people filled the seats at Sisters City Hall last Wednesday evening to hear VFW Post Commander Phillip Gale welcome members and visitors and explain local veterans' programs. The Lady Outlaws notched their first league win of the season with a 47-28 victory on the road against Elmira on Friday, January 9. Sisters jumped out early and held a 13-9 lead at the close of the first quarter. Elmira battled back and held Sisters to just four points in the second period. The Outlaws defeated defending state champion Marist 54-41 on Tuesday, January 6, at home in the league opener. The Outlaws were in control of the game the first two quarters. Tom Blust's Christmas present came a little before the holiday when loads of snow piled up in the mountains, ensuring that the Nordic ski team he coaches for Sisters High School will have plenty of the white stuff to race on for the 2009 season. The Sisters Folk Festival is inviting the community to participate in a "common canvas" project for the upcoming My Own Two Hands fund-raiser. The eighth annual My Own Two Hands celebration, the fund-raiser for the Sisters Americana Project, is scheduled for April 17-18. This year's common canvas is "Masks." There's little fanfare, but excitement has already started building for the opening of Chloe at FivePine. The new restaurant is scheduled to open Wednesday, January 14, at the site of the former Pleaides Restaurant on the FivePine campus. Central Oregon's own Cascade Horizon Band will return to the Sisters High School stage at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 25, for the concert group's sixth annual winter concert. Camp Sherman Post Office will host a special cancellation of the Oregon Statehood stamp on the first day of issue, January 14. This event is to commemorate Oregon's Sesquincentennial. Central Oregon Visitors Association has announced a project with the National Geographic Society, Travel Oregon and Washington State Tourism to develop a bi-state storytelling map - MapGuide - of the Central Cascades Region.
