  • Testing new methods of stewardship

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Jan 15, 2008

Not too many years back, if you wanted to locate a timber logging operation, all you had to do was listen. The angry buzzing of power saws and the screeching steel tracks of bulldozers skidding logs through the forest could be heard a half-mile away. Not anymore. The Forest Service's 346-acre "Green Thin Stewardship Project," adjacent to the Deschutes Land Trust's Metolius Preserve, 10 miles north of Sisters, is an example of "softer" logging practices. What you hear now is... Full story

  • Time travelling at Sisters Fire Hall

    Updated Jan 15, 2008

Hidden away deep in a wall of Sisters new fire station is a portal to the past that will open 30 years down the road. The portal will provide a vignette into what came before for those of the future, a chance to examine Sisters life in the ancient days of 2007. The time capsule, containing all that is familiar to us but could be quaint artifacts of a time gone by for those of Sisters three decades hence, was placed in the wall last Thursday, January 10. The time capsule is the brainchild of Chief Taylor Robertson of the... Full story

Patterson Ranch and all other cervid ranchers in Oregon would have to double their fencing under new rules proposed by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. The rules will be voted on by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission in February. The double fencing - requiring a second line of fence 30 feet inside the perimeter... Full story

The man was located after he contacted Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) employees asking to use a phone. According to Oregon State Police, a trooper and ODOT arrived at approximately 5 p.m. to the scene of a car, a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am, stuck in a snow bank on Highway 20 in the Santiam Pass area. • Letters to the Editor 01/16/2008

    Updated Jan 15, 2008

To the Editor: Last summer we all heard about the dedication and work accomplished by the fire fighters, not only here but in other parts of the United States. We have some other unsung heroes in our midst. Since last June we have had some of the employees of International Line Builders renting from us. In December, the remaining six were sent out of town with about an hour's notice to repair downed lines on the coast, first to Lincoln City then to Astoria. They came back just in time to enjoy the holidays with their... Full story

  • School recycles for fund-raising

    Updated Jan 15, 2008

The tiny Black Butte School located in Camp Sherman is one of the area's hidden treasures. A traditional country school that provides the kind of an education that was common in years gone by has managed to hang on in spite of growth and changing times. Funding the school so that it can continue to offer a classic, rural education has been a challenge, and the school has launched various fund-raising ventures to help allow it to continue. Currently, a small stipend for the school is being realized through a recycling program... Full story

The new pumps will do the same job that five did before, said Jacob Bedawyi, owner of the Sisters Space Age franchise. • City continues development code update

    Updated Jan 15, 2008

The City of Sisters Development Code update is continuing in two phases. The first step is an emergency code update, which is intended to address page numbering and formatting issues, conflicts within the code, incorrect references and definitions and other non-controversial and nondiscretionary errors in the code. The emergency code update is a housekeeping measure that is not intended to address any policy issues, according to city planner Eric Porter. The non-emergency code update is the second, more comprehensive step... Full story

  • City wants sidewalks clear of snow

    Updated Jan 15, 2008

Mother Nature did the cleanup job on Sisters sidewalks last week, with rain washing away the snow that stood inches deep in front of many Sisters businesses. But more snow is surely on the way, and city officials and downtown merchants alike want to make sure merchants keep their sidewalks shoveled clear of snow and ice. City ordinances require that any person in charge of a property - such as a business owner - must remove snow and ice within the first six hours of daylight after the snow falls or the ice forms.... Full story

Sisters Coffee Company last Saturday afternoon provided the first venue in Sisters for Bend musician Greg "Coop" Cooperman. Cooperman's music combines the elements of Ragtime and classic honky tonk with a hint of vintage blues to provide an exciting sound experience that seems to have originated nearly a century ago. Cooperman writes much of his own music, although he does play older and forgotten tunes, as well as common melodies that have the same chords and order but with v... Full story

    Rongi Yost, Correspondent|Updated Jan 15, 2008

The girls basketball team played an outstanding game in their 42-33 win over La Pine at home on Wednesday, January 9. The win was an impressive team effort to overcome one of the top teams in the state. The Lady Outlaws got off to a slow start and with two minutes remaining in the period found themselves down 2-10.
