A battle is brewing over the fate of the enclosed pavilion on the grounds of Mt. Shadows RV Park in Sisters. According to city planner Neil Thompson, RV park owner Wayne Scott took out a permit to build an open-sided picnic shelter on the site, but did not have a permit to build the kind of structure that he eventually put up. Such a structure is not permitted in the landscape management zone where the building is located. The city wants at least the sides of the "temporary st... Full story

According to police chief David Haynes, at least part of the decrease in reported criminal activity can be credited to a partnership between the community and the police in working "to solve or prevent... To the Editor: Does S.A.V.E's annexation measure control growth? No! This type of annexation measure only works in stopping growth when the city has something of value to a developer that he can't get outside the city -- specifically water, sewer and fire protection. In many communities water is difficult to impossible to get unless you hook up to a city's water system. A developer can find water at 22 feet in the Sisters area (HGE 7/94). I believe with the existing System Development Charges it is less expensive for a... Full story

In a society that cannot agree on abortion, capital punishment, marijuana use, censorship, religion, the environment and a host of other issues, what are educators supposed to do about teaching the country's children values? It's often a touchy subject and, while values are not taught today the way they were before the social revolution of the 1960s, they are being taught. The apple cart containing the tidy values package espoused in the first half of the century was not merely upset in the 60's, it was blown apart, sending... Full story
The Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District is waiting to see how badly the fires of tax revolt will singe the district. According to Greg Brown, chairman of the district's board of directors, the district is now waiting for the legislature to determine the impacts of Measure 47... Full story
The Sisters country was beset with damage, destruction and hardships in the weather-year of 1996. The year was marked by extremes -- some substantial snowfall, torrential rains which resulted in localized flooding, and intense summer heat. There were frequent rapid and dramatic weather changes throughout 1996. The year started out as if winter had forgotten Central Oregon. As of mid-January, no snow had fallen in Sisters since December 8, 1995. Hoodoo Ski Bowl was forced to closed due to a shrinking snowpack. During the... Full story
Steve Wilson was unanimously elected Sisters mayor by the new Sisters City Council Thursday, January 9. Wilson was sworn in by Judge Michael Forte along with new councilors Gordon Petrie and Tim Clasen. Petrie was selected as council president. In Sisters the mayor does not have a vote on the council except in case of a tie. The new council's first major action was the approval of a county plan to repave North Pine Street, adding curbs and sidewalks on the east side of the... Full story
