  • Canyon cougar caged, killed

    Jim Anderson|Updated Jan 25, 2000

A two- or three-year-old male cougar killed one sheep and three goats last week at two ranches in McKenzie Canyon northeast of Sisters. Sherode Powers was riding his horse Monday afternoon, January 17, and spotted a cougar standing behind a large juniper. "I got bored after a few minutes just sitting there on my horse," Powers said, "so I shouted at the cougar and it loped off down into Squaw Creek Canyon. "They're non-existent in some classrooms," school board chair Bill Reed said earlier this month. "It's really, really a bad situation." School administrators acknowledge that the textbook situation is dismal. "While we technically meet the state standards, we're constantly running into issues of having the right book and h... Full story

  • Editorial Bradley -- or McCain -- for president

    Updated Jan 25, 2000

Yeah, Bradley has the occasional heart flutter. At least he has a heart. Al Gore is like the guy in a bad sci-fi movie receiving orders from a giant worm growing up his spine. McCain allegedly has a temper. At least he knows the issues. George Bush, like his father before him, is obviously reading from a text he doesn't understand. Folks, do we really want a campaign between two mechanical men driven at us by entrenched special interests? Winning is everything to the puppet masters. So they find puppets who "capture the... Full story
