The controversial proposed Sisters Comprehensive Plan is on its way to the state's Land Conservation and Development Commission following a public hearing January 25 before the Sisters City Council. The council voted unanimously in favor of sending the document to LCDC on a motion offered by City Councilor Jean Cooper. Opponents of a proposed gravel mine and crushing operation west of Sisters were to sit down January 30-31 with mine applicants to begin mediation talks aimed at resolving disputes over the mine operation. Tightening budgets may force the Sisters School District to accommodate enrollment growth simply by putting more students in every classroom. Figures developed by school business manager Earl Armbruster indicate that even with no growth in student population, programs may be cut as soon as next year just to meet current financial obligations. Oregon State Police are investigating a January 26 incident in which shots were fired into a home on Deer Ridge Road near Sisters. According to police, seven small caliber bullet holes were found in the outside wall of the house and two large caliber rounds were allegedly fired through a window into the home. Police reported that six people were in the home when the shooting occurred Friday evening. No arrests had been made at press time.... Full story
A 22- year- old Salem man died sometime Saturday night, January 27, after crashing into a tree at Hoodoo Ski Area. The body of James Scariot was recovered at 6:20 a.m. Sunday after an all- night search by Scariot's companions and members of the Santiam Ski Patrol. Their efforts had been hampered by a heavy snowfall. Scariot's friends said they last saw him at 8:45 p.m. Saturday as the group skied the Powder Valley Trail run.
