The Sisters City Council has unanimously approved an emergency ordinance that would allow a 90-day extension to a temporary 180-day operating permit. The move, made at last Thursday's council meeting, clears the way for Ky Karnecki's Wild Mountain mushroom and jerky stand to open up within seven to 10 days, once Karnecki has filed the proper papers with the city and paid the fees. To take effect without a 30-day waiting period the ordinance had to be an "emergency" ordinance, and for approval, the council vote had to be... Full story

To the Editor: Is anyone else in town besides me getting tired of having to clean up and dispose of all the nuisance tumbleweeds that blow onto ones property? After the last wind storm I had a big bunch of them blow in (again) and so did many of the other residents in our neighborhood. They're big, bulky, and some have stickers akin to thistles and are a pain to get rid of since you can't burn them anymore. If you stuff them into the High Desert Disposal yard debris containers, a few big ones fill the containers completely... Full story
Two weeks ago winter made a noticeable, but brief, appearance in Central Oregon. Some snow and a soaking rain fell at lower elevations, while the mountains received a generous snowpack. Over the past few days, however, the weather has become less active, and it looks like that trend will continue for the foreseeable future. From late November through mid-January, a blocking ridge in the upper atmosphere over the U.S. West Coast was effective in keeping Pacific storms... Full story

The 2012 Friends of the Sisters Library (FOSL) Art Exhibit is a Sisters Country success; the evidence for that statement can be seen in the many happy library patrons who have been seen leaving the library, giving the exhibit a hearty thumbs-up. It's difficult, if not impossible, to single out any one piece or artist as the grand winner; about the time someone begins to feel this or that piece is the "winner of the show," someone interrupts and says, "But have you seen the...
