    Jim Cornelius|Updated Feb 3, 1998

After years of expecting Sisters to install a sewer system, Deschutes County is telling the city that septic restrictions are going to get tighter. The county will continue to allow sub-standard, short-term septic repairs until city residents vote on a sewer system in May, according to a letter from Roger Everett of the county's Environmental Health Division and Dick Nichols of the Department of Environmental Quality. "If, however, the city's efforts to build a community... Full story

Ten-year-old Clifton Roberts is pretty happy with his surroundings these days. His new classroom at Sisters Elementary School is so comfortable, Clifton says he could stay there the rest of his life. For the 100 or so students and teachers who moved into the school's four new rooms last month, the addition has quickly come to feel like home. "For our current needs, this is a perfect fit," said Kelly Powell, who teaches a class of 23 fourth-graders in one of the new rooms. The addition, a result of a community-wide volunteer... Full story

    Updated Feb 3, 1998

Local garbage haulers know the neighborhoods they work in - and they know when something's not quite right. Now they've been trained to act as the eyes and ears of the sheriff's department, to report accidents, road hazards, people in trouble and suspicious activity. The Curb Crime partnership between the sheriff's department and the Deschutes Refuse and Recycling Association - which includes haulers for Sisters and the surrounding area - is an example of the departments emphasis on community policing. According to Sheriff... Full story

The dog's owner reported the shooting and transported his dog to Sisters Veterinary Clinic. • Letters, letters, letters

    Updated Feb 3, 1998

    * * * To the Editor: I heartily concur with Michael Blumm (Letters, January 28), that "a good deal more public information" must be shared before Sisters goes forward with a sewer. Mr. Blumm's own letter epitomizes this fact. I spoke with Mr. Blumm and discovered that his own suspicions are based on a lack of information. He has not attended any of the city's sewer workshops nor has he attended the chamber meetings where the sewer was discussed. He does not receive the fact sheets that are mailed with city water bills. Mr. Bl... Full story
