The Metolius River Basin holds a special place in the hearts of those who live in the Sisters Country. It is equally precious to thousands of people who have visited Camp Sherman and fished or hiked along the river over many decades. Many consider the Metolius Basin sacred ground, and proposals for two resorts in the area immediately sparked opposition, despite Jefferson County's decision that the resorts are appropriate under the county's new zoning map. Contention over the... Full story
Chris Mortimer, a naturalist from California, was driving over the Santiam Pass on Wednesday, January 28, when he was shocked to see a very large, wolf-like animal dash across the road in front of him. "Wolf!" he shouted, and pulled over to the side of the highway. With only a small, point-and-shoot camera at his disposal, he did the best he could to document what may turn out to be the first wild wolf seen in these parts in over 100 years. "I think it's too far from Idaho to... Full story

On October 7, Bree took Ricky to the emergency room at St. Charles Medical Center, where a doctor performed a CAT scan. "The doctor came back and said... Full story
To the Editor: In the interest of keeping discussions of the Local Option school levy focused on the facts, I'd like to offer some observations about the numbers presented in the opinion piece last week: Public school enrollment this year is currently 1,323 pupils (not 1,200). Spending per pupil is $9,110, not the $10,000 stated in the opinion piece, so spending per classroom is about $210,000 - not $230,000. Yes, $210,000 is a lot of money. It includes teacher's salaries, heating, transportation, maintenance, custodians,... Full story

With two excellent World War II films coming to Sisters in recent weeks, it seems like a good moment to look at a few other films that vividly capture the great crisis of civilization in the 1940s. "Valkyrie" did an outstanding job of depicting the July 20, 1944 bomb plot and coup that nearly did away with Hitler. "Defiance," coming to Sisters Movie House later this month, tells the story of the Bielski Brothers of Belarus, who led a Jewish partisan movement that created a... Full story
