Brett Miller is a Wounded Warrior. Severely injured in an IED attack in Iraq, his road to healing has been long and winding. He was helped along the way by the Wounded Warrior Project, and now he's paying that help forward. And he has found that helping others along the same road is the most healing act of all. Miller, serving with G Troop, 82nd Cavalry, Oregon National Guard, was wounded on August 11, 2005, on a road between Kirkuk and Mosul in northern Iraq. An improvised... Full story

To the Editor: We were interested to read in The Nugget that between February 25 and March 12 voters within the Sisters School District (this means voters within the entire educational district, not just the city) will have the opportunity to cast their ballot to renew the Sisters local option school levy. It is ballot measure 9-88. This school levy is a continuation of what we have already supported here in the Sisters School District. Voting "Yes" will not raise our taxes but rather just keep them at the current rate.... Full story
The Sisters Science Club will host a discussion on "Male/Female Sports Performance Differences," presented by Professor John Liccardo on Thursday, February 14. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for food and refreshments, and the lecture begins at 7 p.m. In the world of nature, "strength" can mean the difference between survival and extinction. He left a distinguished career in research with the U.S. Forest Service, but continued managing an experimental forest as a private contractor, coached Special... Full story
Sisters stayed focused and determined in their game against La Pine on Friday, February 1, and finished with a 58-38 victory. The Hawks came out with a box-and-one on Taylor Nieri to try and stifle the Outlaws' offense. Savannah Spear hit two buckets and one three-pointer to answer back. At the close of the first quarter Sisters held a 14-7 lead. A slowed-down tempo and many fouls made it a struggle for the Outlaws in the second quarter. Cassidy Edwards was able to score four... According to the famous Pennsylvania groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, there will be an early spring this year - quite the contradiction for Sisters Country. Each winter on Groundhog Day, folks in west-central Pennsylvania wait for Punxsutawney Phil to emerge from Gobbler Knob and provide a forecast for either a late winter or an early spring ahead. According to the folklore, which all started in 1886, if he sees his shadow we will get six more weeks of winter, if he doesn't we will get an early spring. The prediction is made at... Full story

We create tools and machines to do that - and that's a big part of what has made humans successful. Last week, third- and fourth-grade students of Sisters Elementary School were treated to an understanding of some of the working principles of the lever, wheel, pulley and ramp by members of the Sister Science Club (SSC). Science Club co-founder Dr. Bob Collins got... Full story

What images are usually associated with elementary school PE classes? Children's games? Foot races? Dodgeball? Children at most schools have their physical education classes in a gym or on a playground. Camp Sherman's Black Butte School (BBS), however, has a PE program that sounds more like a fantasy camp. As befits a community carved out of the Cascade forest, the little two-room schoolhouse in the woods takes full advantage of its surrounding environment. As might be expected at an elementary school, the BBS PE program... Full story
Back in the 1950s and '60s, Sylvia Cara had herself a career in country music. The young singer was good enough to tour California with the late, great Marty Robbins and to share the stage with Rose Maddox, one of the luminaries of California's active country music scene. Sylvia performed as half of The Cara Sisters with her friend Janet Burke or her actual sister Joan Jackson. "We sang all through high school at all the dances," the Sisters woman recalled in an interview... Full story
