Local farmers and ranchers are putting Squaw Creek water into the ground to recharge the underground aquifer this winter. The Squaw Creek Irrigation District (SCID) is participating in a regional effort to recharge the groundwater beneath the area's porous volcanic surface. According to SCID manager Marc Thalacker, the district will divert between 15 and 20 cubic feet per second (cfs) from Squaw Creek throughout the winter. The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office has purchased 64 computers, 62 of which will be data terminals installed in patrol cars and linked to Law Enforcement Data Services by radio modem. According to Sheriff Greg Brown, $275,000 of the $350,000 purchase price was provided by a federal grant, with the additional $75,000 from the sheriff's budget. The Sisters Branch Library will celebrate 10 years of service on Friday, February 11. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, the all-day celebration will take place between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Cookies will be served. Children can be hit hard by grief when a well-loved relative -- or a classmate or a teacher -- dies. Hospice of Bend-La Pine has set out to provide help in these types of situations. "If children's bereavement needs aren't addressed problems are likely to pop up later," according to Sharon Strohecker, director of Hospice of Bend La Pine. Outlaws swimmers took on some 4A competition on Saturday, February 5, in the Central Oregon JV District Championships at Juniper Aquatic and Fitness Center. The swimmers were allowed to participate in two individual and two relay events. However, scores were eliminated for those Outlaw swimmers and relays that are expected to finish in the finals during the upcoming 3A District Championships in Woodburn. The Sisters Outlaws basketball team just missed pulling off an upset against the pumped-up Mollala Indians on Friday, February 4, losing a heartbreaker 60-61. Sisters trailed the Indians by as much as 17 points. Sisters was in a 17-5 hole after the first quarter and was still buried 30-16 going into halftime.
