  • Traffic stop leads to heroin bust

    A traffic stop near Sisters led to the arrest of a Bend man on heroin possession charges. On January 28, at about 10:25 p.m., Deschutes County Sheriff's Office Street Crimes Unit Detectives and Patrol Deputies initiated a traffic stop on a green 1997 Subaru Legacy, being driven by David Robinson. The location of the traffic stop was on Highway 20, just east of Jordan Road, in a rural area east of Sisters. There were no passengers in the vehicle.     In a handwritten workbook memoir made for her family, Julia Hammond wrote: "We owe much to those who have little." That belief served as a watchword for Hammond during her life in Sisters. That life came to a peaceful end on Saturday, February 5, when the beloved co-founder of Sisters Habitat for Humanity died peacefully at home at the age of 88.   • Community raises funds for scholarships

    The Sisters community came out in force Saturday night to put money behind the dreams and aspirations of graduating seniors. By the end of the Rhinestone Cowboy Auction, sponsored by Sisters Graduate Resource Organization (Sisters GRO) and held at FivePine Convention Center, the coffers were filled with an estimated $21,000, which will be dispersed to graduating seniors from Sisters High School.     To the Editor: In the spring of 1991 our family received a telephone call from Sisters Habitat for Humanity (HfH) informing us that we were to be the first recipient of a Sisters HfH home. In January 1992 we moved into that home and our lives changed forever. Not only did we purchase a warm, decent, affordable home, we received the friendship of Hort and Julia Hammond, founders of Sisters HfH.     Julia Shingle Hammond, born on June 25, 1922 to parents Mary Shingle Ludwick and William Harlan Ludwick in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 5, 2011.     The Outlaws boys basketball team lost by just one point, 58-57, to the Billies at Pleasant Hill in a non-league game on Tuesday, February 1. Three days later Sisters lost by two in a final score of 55-53 at home to the visiting Huskies of Sweet Home.     Sisters' EMTs will soon have new state-of-the-art equipment to care for heart attack patients, thanks to a grant awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District successfully applied for a $102,492 Assistance to Firefighters Grant.
