    Updated Feb 12, 2008

The landscape is a monotone of sand. Plagues of flies surround your face. Sand fleas harass your body. The sun pounds down like a hammer, hitting 147 degrees. You live on an island inside the wire. No freedom. Out-of-your-mind boredom- except when you face intense danger. This is a small picture of war in Iraq. Why would anyone want go back? • Some Realtors remain upbeat

    Updated Feb 12, 2008

Although there is no denying that the local housing market is flat, sales continue and a few Realtors have had exceptional years. The results of the last year have been a mixed bag, leaving many trying to make some sense of where the market is going. Mike Reed, principal broker of Coldwell Banker Reed Bros. Realty, is far from pessimistic concerning the current market. "I wouldn't try to say that it is a good market because it isn't. But that doesn't mean that it is dead. There are still homes selling, and some of our agents... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 02/13/2008

    Updated Feb 12, 2008

To the Editor: In regard to the letter from John Rahm: I am neither a mountain biker nor a horseback rider. I do run in the forest. I am concerned about the U.S. Forest Service "selling" our public lands to a particular group for their entertainment. This is especially troubling when the leader of one of these groups seeks to misinform the public. I personally know people who began riding horses in the Peterson Ridge area in 1979. They were "grooming" trails 10 years before the bike groups. Larry R. Boyd •••... Full story

  • Use the carrot, not the stick

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Feb 12, 2008

We support the City of Sisters' goal of eliminating yard debris burning inside the city limits. As Sisters grows more dense and more populous, outdoor burning becomes a safety hazard and impinges on neighbors' quality of life. But an outright ban may not be the best way to go. The Sisters-Camp Sherman fire district doesn't want anything to do with enforcing such a ban, and for good reason. It would impose extra costs and take away from fire personnel's ability to respond to... Full story
